Role Responsibilities:

  • Inspect, service, troubleshoot, and repair mobile railroad maintenance equipment.
  • Work in shop and field environments.
  • Provide service support to equipment on the track.
  • Assist operators with daily inspections and maintenance.
  • Monitor equipment performance and perform breakdown maintenance.
  • Perform physical outdoor work, including in extreme weather conditions.
  • Work shifts, holidays, weekends, and various cycles, often away from home.

Field Maintainers are assigned to specific gangs and travel within the region. Living allowances are provided for expenses while working away from home.

Technical Knowledge Requirements:

  • Basic knowledge of heavy equipment mechanical systems, including diesel engines, gas engines, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
  • Basic understanding of computers and mechanical principles.
  • Ability to assess mechanical components for wear and defects.
  • Commitment to maintaining trade standards and staying current with technology.
  • Ability to identify and correct unsafe conditions.

Other Job Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Qualification in electric and acetylene welding.
  • Ability to work away from home on various cycles.
  • Possession of basic mechanical tools.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Postsecondary training in maintenance and repair of heavy equipment, e.g., Heavy Equipment Technician, Motive Power Technician, Diesel Technician.
