WildSafeBC Community Coordinator – Rossland Trail

Are you passionate about wildlife in your community? Do you want to contribute to human-wildlife conflict reduction in a meaningful way?

British Columbia Conservation Foundation’s vision is for thriving fish and wildlife populations in British Columbia. Our mission supports fish and wildlife through education, collaboration, and habitat conservation. The Foundation is a mission-driven, registered non-profit and charity, established in 1969.

WildSafeBC is the provincial leader in preventing conflict with wildlife through collaboration, education, and community solutions. Our message of “keeping wildlife wild and communities safe” emphasizes the important role humans play in reducing our impact on wildlife and increasing community safety. We focus on actions to avoid attracting wildlife into communities, raising awareness of human-wildlife conflict issues, and seeking solutions to reduce conflict.

The WildSafeBC Community Coordinator position offers a unique opportunity to make a difference in reducing human-wildlife conflicts locally. Essential skills include professionalism, good communication, community engagement, and the ability to work independently. Community Coordinators will attend training sessions to learn conflict-reduction strategies specific to BC wildlife species and effective community engagement techniques.

Responsibilities:
  1. Deliver WildSafeBC presentations to community groups, service clubs, and schools.
  2. Arrange, set up, and present at public displays and bear spray workshops at community events.
  3. Conduct door-to-door campaigns and garbage bin tagging in neighborhoods with wildlife conflicts.
  4. Develop and maintain relationships with local Indigenous communities, knowledge keepers, conservation officers, bylaw officers, municipalities, and community groups.
  5. Engage with local media (print, radio, television, social media).
  6. Work with all community groups and individuals, including businesses and campgrounds, regardless of their views on wildlife.
  7. Identify wildlife attractants causing issues and develop conflict reduction plans based on community needs.
  8. Record and report activities and data as required by provincial staff.
  9. Produce an end-of-season Annual Report for the community program.
Required Qualifications:
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Reliable vehicle insured for work purposes, passing daily inspections.
  • Willing and able to pass a Criminal Record check.
  • Good understanding of local human-wildlife issues.
  • Proven ability to write clear, concise reports.
  • Demonstrated public speaking skills.
  • Ability to build relationships with partners and collaborators.
  • Reside near or in the community and be legally eligible to work in Canada.
Desirable Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Education or related qualifications.
  • Studies in Natural Resources or Renewable Resources.
  • Experience in communications and community engagement.
Skills:
  • Strong interpersonal and public engagement skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency, including virtual meeting platforms, cloud storage, Word, and Excel.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms.
Application Process:

Applicants should submit a cover letter and a complete resume with three references, as two separate PDF documents named with their own name (e.g., FirstName_LastName_Coverletter.pdf).

Clearly state how you meet the qualifications in your application. Only qualified candidates will be contacted for interviews.

Additional Notes:
  • Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis; apply as soon as possible.
