Job description

Position Overview:

X-Terra Environmental Services Ltd. is currently seeking a highly motivated and skilled Wetland/Wildlife Ecologist to join our growing team in Lloydminster, Alberta. The successful candidate will support a variety of regulatory and field programs in Western Canada, with a focus on wetlands, vegetation, and wildlife assessments in prairie and boreal landscapes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and execute field programs for wetland delineation and classification, wildlife surveys, vegetation inventories, soil descriptions, and habitat assessments in compliance with provincial and federal guidelines.
  • Prepare and submit regulatory documentation including Wetland Assessment and Impact Reports (WAIR), WAIFs, Water Act applications, and other environmental permitting requirements.
  • Identify and evaluate environmental sensitivities and constraints related to proposed developments, including wetlands, rare plants, wildlife habitats, and species at risk.
  • Conduct wildlife field studies including breeding bird surveys, amphibian call surveys, winter tracking, and remote camera monitoring.
  • Develop detailed field data collection protocols and ensure data integrity, accuracy, and completeness.
  • Coordinate and manage field logistics, including safety planning, equipment preparation, and travel arrangements for remote and multi-day fieldwork.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior biologists and field staff in both office and field settings.
  • Analyze and interpret ecological data using scientific methods and relevant regulatory frameworks.
  • Write clear, concise, and technically sound environmental reports and deliverables to support project approvals and client decision-making.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including environmental scientists, project managers, and regulatory specialists.
  • Support proposal preparation, including scoping, budget development, and scheduling for vegetation, wetland, and wildlife components.
  • Represent X-Terra in client meetings, regulatory discussions, and public consultations when required.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, policy changes, and best practices in wetland, wildlife, and vegetation ecology.
  • Ensure all work complies with internal quality assurance standards and client requirements.
  • Adhere to and promote X-Terra’s health and safety policies and field safety standards.
  • Utilize GIS and mapping software to support spatial analysis and presentation of ecological data (optional but preferred).

Qualifications:

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
  • Registered or eligible for registration as P.Biol., P.Ag., or equivalent.
  • 3–10+ years of relevant environmental consulting experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in wetland and wildlife field programs.
  • Familiarity with the Alberta Wetland Policy, Water Act, and EPEA permitting processes.
  • Strong plant and/or wildlife identification skills in prairie and boreal regions.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; experience with GIS considered an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and willingness to travel for fieldwork.

Wage:

$75,000 to $100,000 annually based on education, experience and professional affiliation.
