Purpose of Position:

The Western Canada Operations Data Modeling Analyst, reporting to the Western Canada Manager, Operations Data, plays a key role in driving operational excellence and continuous improvement across all Western Canada programs. This role is responsible for developing and maintaining advanced data models that enable predictive and prescriptive analytics, simulation-based decision support, and network flow optimization.

The analyst will collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to comprehend business requirements, transform raw operational data into clean, structured, and scalable models, and produce actionable insights that inform collection routing, resource planning, and performance management. This role encompasses advanced analytics, operational data engineering, and decision-making, ensuring that data-driven solutions are aligned with strategic and tactical business goals.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Predictive & Prescriptive Analytics

• Develop and implement predictive models to forecast material volumes, contamination rates, and service demand patterns using historical and real-time data.

• Build prescriptive analytics tools to support operational decision-making, such as optimal routing, shift planning, and resource allocation.

• Leverage simulation modeling (e.g., discrete event or agent-based models) to test operational scenarios and evaluate process improvement opportunities.

Optimization & Network Flow Modeling

• Design and maintain mathematical optimization models to enhance efficiency across the collection and post-collection logistics network, including routing, bin distribution, facility throughput, and scheduling.

• Work collaboratively with Operations and Logistics teams to translate real-world constraints into solvable models using tools like Excel based Solvers or programming language-based solvers.

Data Modeling & Transformation

• Structure and maintain foundational data models from raw operational and logistics data sources (e.g., collection events, contamination logs, vendor reports).

• Build clean, scalable, and automated data transformation pipelines using SQL, Python, or R in coordination with reporting teams. Some experience in cloud-based data ETL is desirable, but not mandatory

• Harmonize disparate data sources across jurisdictions and program types to ensure consistent, integrated modeling approaches.

• Develop intuitive decision-support tools and scenario analysis frameworks for stakeholders to evaluate trade-offs (e.g., cost vs. service level, staffing vs. volume).

• Present complex modeling results in accessible formats (dashboards, storyboards, written insights) for non-technical decision-makers.

• Support dashboard and reporting initiatives by delivering model outputs and indicators that integrate into Power BI or other visualization platforms.

• Collaborate with the Reporting Analyst to ensure modeling insights align with KPIs and metrics tracked across the organization.

• Ability to convert into dashboard concept that can be implemented by reporting analysts

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Governance

• Engage stakeholders from Supply Chain, Operations, Sustainability, and IT to define modeling requirements and validate outputs.

• Document modeling assumptions, data dictionaries, and business logic clearly to ensure transparency and reproducibility.

• Good understanding of Agile Delivery platform along with understanding of Agile principles

• Maintain data governance practices to ensure data integrity, traceability, and alignment with enterprise systems (e.g., SAP, AWS).

• Evaluate current operational processes and identify opportunities for data-driven improvements through automation, optimization, and experimentation.

• Contribute to technology pilots (e.g., route sensors, AI-driven contamination detection) by integrating results into models or decision tools.

• Promote a Continuous Improvement mindset within the data and operations teams, identifying standardization and automation opportunities.

Interpersonal/Communications:

a) Internal Relationships:

• Work closely with the Western Canada Manager, Operations Data to identify reporting opportunities and requirements.

• Collaborate with Recycle BC and SK Recycles staff to deliver timely reporting.
