Position Description

Are you seeking an opportunity in a fast paced, team based, multi-disciplined environment, while collaborating with others and supporting the navy, coast guard, and commercial customer? Serco has a great opportunity for you! This position is located in Victoria, British Columbia.

This position is contingent upon your ability to obtain/maintain a Canadian Security Clearance (Reliability / Controlled Good or higher).

As a Welding Technologist, you will engage with the design/engineering and production teams and establish welding techniques and practices for executing welding work in a Shipyard. The programs may involve new vessel construction, refits and in service support of marine platforms such as ships and submarines.

You will participate in performing design integration, coordinating inputs from various naval architectural and other engineering disciplines, such as marine engineering and structures, into balanced, closed solution designs to establish principal characteristics and design features such as length, beam, depth, draft, displacement, speed and other performance parameters.

In this role, you will:

  • Apply metallurgical principles to determine how metal properties react to one another, establish safe combinations of metal, and identify the right welding technique/ positions for welding and metal fabrication.
  • Ensure primary consideration is given to Health, Safety, and Environmental issues in all activities undertaken within areas of responsibility.
  • Have a good knowledge of and be easily able to understand the relevant welding codes to be able to identify the process and materials for ensuring the metal components and techniques create a high-quality component or product to fulfill the requirements set out in the specified codes.
  • In an office environment, your responsibilities will include:
    • Reviewing welding project specifications.
    • Providing welding material recommendations.
    • Developing new welding procedure specifications.
    • Creating welding procedure data sheets.
  • Work both inside and outside ships and submarines undergoing refit. This may involve performing inspections on a scaffolding, occasional entry into confined spaces such as tanks, climbing ladders and exposure to welding fumes.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • College or Technical School Training Program or equivalent education with a minimum of 2 years of experience in the interpretation of engineering drawings including welding symbols and work with welding related codes and standards (i.e. ASME, CSA, ISO, AWS).
  • Must be eligible to obtain a Reliability Level Clearance prior to employment. (Canadian Citizen / Permanent Resident Status is required.)
  • Must be eligible for a Level 1 CSA W178.0 Welding Inspector.
  • Must have a NDT certificate.
  • Experience with site shutdowns, ship construction, ship refits and ship repairs is required.
  • Demonstrate continuing education courses over the past employment.
  • Travel up to 10% may be required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of metallurgy and welding of a wide variety of metals (e.g. copper, aluminum, cast iron, and stainless metals).
  • Knowledge of layout spaces and relationships.
  • Knowledge of material safety data sheets (MSDS).
  • Knowledge of welding specifications.
  • Knowledge of all types of welding rods and related fluxes and products.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings.
  • Ability to use small office equipment and computers.
  • Layout/fit up principles and practices.
  • Applicable welding codes and standards.
  • Going on-board vessels in dock for conducting inspections, which may require climbing ladders and scaffoldings.

Additional Desired Experience and Skills:

  • Completion of a formal four (4) year apprenticeship is an asset.
  • CSA W47.1/2 Welding Supervisor.
  • Experience in a welding Quality Control or Quality Assurance role would be considered an asset.
  • Experience as a qualified welder (preference for red seal accreditation).
  • General knowledge about the principles of operation of a submarine, its design/layout, materials used, and types of systems in it is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of types of defects in systems normally seen on marine vessels.
  • Knowledge behavior of materials used in marine systems under environmental conditions.
  • Prior co-op term, internship or experience in Marine industry, Oil and Gas, Department of National Defence, Department of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (Canadian Coastguard), heavy engineering industry/field jobs would be considered an asset.
