Job description

As a welder, your responsibilities will include the fabrication of custom prototypes from supplied drawings, jigs, and fixtures to produce parts that meet customer specifications. The use of various hand tools, machinery, and equipment will be required, along with your ability to read and understand production drawings, blueprints, work orders, and other written instructions.

Welding, brazing, and soldering machine operators perform some or all of the following duties:

• Specialize in certain types of welding such as custom fabrication, shipbuilding and repair, aerospace precision welding, pressure vessel welding, pipeline construction welding, structural construction welding, or machinery and equipment repair welding.
• Operate previously set-up welding machines such as spot, butt, and seam resistance or gas and arc welding machines to fabricate or repair metal parts.
• Operate brazing or soldering machines to bond metal parts or fill holes, indentations, and seams with solder.
• Start up, shut down, adjust, and monitor robotic welding production lines.
• Assist with maintenance and repair of welding, brazing, and soldering equipment.
• Adjust welding heads and tooling according to work specifications.

Requirements:

• Read and interpret blueprints or welding process specifications.
• Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment using processes such as GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, PAW, SMAW, OAW, resistance welding, and SAW.
• Operate manual or semi-automatic flame-cutting equipment.
• Operate brazing and soldering equipment.
• Operate metal shaping machines like brakes, shears, and other bending and straightening machines.
• Weld on extra layers to repair worn parts of metal products.
• Complete a three-year apprenticeship program.
• Possess over three years of work experience in the trade along with some college or industry courses in welding to qualify for trade certification.
• Trade certification is mandatory in Alberta and voluntary in other provinces and territories.
• Secondary school completion is usually required.
• Red Seal endorsement is available upon successful completion of the interprovincial Red Seal examination.

Welding, brazing, and soldering machine operators:

• Require some secondary school education.
• Usually undergo several months of on-the-job training.
• Experience as a machine operator helper may be required.
• Experience with robotics may be required.
