Job summary

Seabird Island Band is seeking a Food and Nutritional Wellness Worker to prepare and serve meals for program participants on weekends. You will follow established menus, support food safety, and help foster a culturally safe dining environment that respects Indigenous traditions.

Under supervision, you will assist with nutrition education, integrate First Nations foods where possible, and collaborate with nurses and program staff to meet dietary needs while maintaining accurate kitchen logs.

Qualifications

  • Certificate or diploma in Nutrition, Community Health, Food Services, Culinary Arts, Public Health
  • Equivalency: a combination of relevant experience and training may be considered
  • FOODSAFE Level 1 (or equivalent provincial certification)
  • WHMIS training
  • Valid Food Handler or Safe Food credential appropriate to the province/territory
  • 6-12 months experience in food service, community health, or wellness programming (including practicum/co-op)
  • Experience handling dietary restrictions, allergy tracking, and basic food safety documentation (e.g., temperature logs)
  • Demonstrated understanding of First Nations food traditions, cultural safety, and trauma-informed approaches
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to lift/move supplies (up to ~20-25 kg) and stand for extended periods

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and serve nutritious meals and snacks for program participants
  • Plan and prepare breakfast and lunch offerings for weekend shifts
  • Prepare dinner meal kits and provide preparation instructions for handoff to staff/clients
  • Incorporate traditional First Nations foods into meal plans where possible
  • Follow documented dietary needs, allergies, and restrictions
  • Document meal service activities and communicate concerns to staff
  • Support nutrition education and food literacy initiatives
  • Maintain clean, safe kitchen environment and complete daily logs
  • Assist with inventory, receiving, labeling, and organizing deliveries
  • Participate in handover/reporting processes to ensure continuity of service
