Job description

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. Our customers include the world's leading public cloud and silicon providers, and industry leaders in many sectors. The company is a pioneer of globally distributed collaboration, with 1100+ colleagues in 75+ countries and very few office-based roles. Teams meet two to four times yearly in person, in interesting locations around the world, to align on strategy and execution.

The company is founder-led, profitable, and growing.

We are hiring a Web/UI Engineer to develop a data-rich and reliable user experience. These frontends are constructed using JS, CSS, React, and Flutter, and serve as Canonical's enterprise products that act as the company's face to our users.

To create consistency across our products and sites, we have a central team that builds an open-source React toolkit and presentation layer, the Vanilla Framework. We aim to develop this further to help more open-source projects build performant and accessible interfaces that respond well to diverse layouts. We use REST APIs for communication, and API design is a key part of our process.

Flutter is a new front-end technology with the potential to unify desktop and web development. We are expanding the team's exposure to Flutter and have roles focused on web and Ubuntu engineering for this technology.

We hire developers with outstanding academic results and a passion for open-source software, innovation, and cutting-edge web technologies. In these roles, you will contribute high-quality front-end and back-end code, exhibit technical leadership, and deliver exceptional design and user experience.

We also encourage colleagues to engage with the broader open-source community, contributing to a broad range of technologies and ensuring seamless software operations at scale.

Location: This is a globally remote role.

The role entails:

  1. Design and implement well-tested and documented software in Web technologies or Flutter.
  2. Debug and fix issues encountered by your users.
  3. Participate in our engineering process through code and architectural reviews.
  4. Collaborate with community and colleagues on technical specifications.
  5. Contribute to technical documentation to make it the best of its kind.
  6. Seek improvements to engineering and operations practices.
  7. Deploy and operate services developed by the team.
  8. Contribute to the success of your product through technical advocacy.

What we are looking for in you:

  1. An exceptional academic track record from both high school and university.
  2. Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about your alternative path.
  3. Drive and a track record of exceeding expectations.
  4. Well-organized, self-starting, and able to deliver on schedule.
  5. Professional manner interacting with colleagues, partners, and community.
  6. Experience designing and writing high-quality Web technologies.
  7. Experience with and passion for Typescript, React, or Flutter.
  8. An eye for accessibility and performance.
  9. Professional written and spoken English.
  10. Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
  11. Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability.
  12. Passion, thoughtfulness, and self-motivation.
  13. Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  14. Result-oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments.
  15. Ability to travel twice a year for company events, up to two weeks each.

Nice-to-have skills:

  1. Experience with container tech such as LXD, Docker, and Kubernetes.
  2. Attention to detail concerning user-centric UI development.
  3. REST API design, development, and governance.
  4. Performance engineering and security experience.

What we offer colleagues:

  • Distributed work environment with twice-yearly team sprints in person.
  • Personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year.
  • Annual compensation review.
  • Recognition rewards.
  • Annual holiday leave.
  • Maternity and paternity leave.
  • Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Opportunity to travel to new locations to meet colleagues.
  • Priority Pass and travel upgrades for long-haul company events.
