Overview

Web Developer. The Burnaby School District invites applications for a full-time Web Developer. Reporting to the Assistant Superintendent and working with the District Principal of Education Technology, Manager Director – Communication & Community Engagement, and the Information Technology Services Department, the Web Developer is responsible for the maintenance and on-going development of the district web environments. The Web Developer implements the strategic directions set by the District and has responsibility for the configuration, design, and ongoing development of both the structure and content of the district websites, portal and web applications. This position is responsible for the timely day-to-day maintenance of the district web and portal environments, the support of other websites within the district as required, and for maintaining websites in keeping with District policy and regulations regarding web publishing and web security. The position is also responsible for the development and maintenance of web applications that help collect, manage, organize and analyse district data. The work of this employee requires a significant degree of independence, judgement, interaction with people in and outside of the district, and involves a great deal of writing; often within tight deadlines and occasionally with little or no notice.

Responsibilities
  • Prepares, formats (layout and design) and posts information to the district websites and portal that may include text, tables, images and video, forms, and work flows.
  • Manages end-user access to web sites, portal and web applications.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems experienced by contributors and users of the district websites, portal and web applications.
  • Ensures the presentation of information on the district websites and portal is attractive and conform to best practices in web design and layout.
  • Maintains the integrity and branding of the corporate identity.
  • Reviews all web pages on a regular basis to ensure conformity to district standards and notifying the appropriate people if posted information is incomplete, obsolete or unclear.
  • Develops and tests web applications for the district and schools.
  • Assists and collaborates with other key staff on web-based strategies to support the marketing of the district and enhance the communications with the community.
  • Supports and trains other staff on district web policy and security, style guides, and content management tools.
  • Communicates to staff and others; responds to enquiries; and provides information of a detailed or specialized nature.
Job Requirements
  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Graduation from a recognized university program or two-year technical program, including or supplemented by appropriate diploma and certifications, plus a minimum of five years related experience.
  • Thorough understanding and ability with current web development tools, web programming, publishing environments, web technologies and protocols, office productivity software, and graphic design tools.
  • Ability to be creative and innovative in writing and web design.
  • Ability to administer portal applications and participate in the design/development of this environment including the creation and use of forms and workflow.
  • Thorough experience in customizing web applications and configurations.
  • Strong design skills as they relate to web-based graphics, usability, and information architecture.
  • Excellent written, editing, presentation and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of office procedures and appropriate protocol.
  • Valid B.C. Driver's License (Class 5) and vehicle for transportation between sites.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at the level required for the job.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job.
  • Demonstrated ability to work at the level of independence and with the degree of initiative appropriate to the position.

This is a regular position working 35 hours/week and will be required to work flexible hours including before and after school hours, and occasionally weekends. The wage is $37.90 per hour.
