Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Manager, Strategic Communications, this position is responsible for writing, formatting, and editing content for the Town of Milton website, including its microsites and internal website (intranet). The focus of this role is to support the migration of these sites from their current content management systems (CMS) to upgraded platforms.

This position requires expertise in web writing and digital communications (plain language, accessible considerations for the web, CMS experience), strategic communications planning, and creating and delivering compelling presentations and project progress updates. This role also requires the ability to provide strategic advice and counsel to staff and management across the corporation.
Major Job Responsibilities

Web content planning and consultation

  • Supports the Manager, Strategic Communications in developing and executing migration strategies and plans for transferring the Town of Milton’s current website and intranet content to upgraded content management systems and platforms

  • Reviews all content on the external website and intranet to identify duplications, opportunities to consolidate content, pages that should be flagged for deletion or rewritten, and other recommendations that align with web content best practices

  • Consults with stakeholders and subject matter experts in various divisions and departments to develop content migration plans, including workback schedules, content recommendations, proposed information architecture, and other relevant topics to facilitate the updating and migrating of content

  • Plans, coordinates, and delivers workshops, focus groups, public engagements, surveys, and other stakeholder consultations to obtain relevant insights, test or validate user experience, or to achieve other outcomes identified by the Manager, Strategic Communications in relation to the external website migration or intranet migration

  • Provides evidence-based advice and recommendations on content and migration strategies based on a variety of resources, including research of similar organizations, web best practices, accessibility, the Town’s available data and analytics, and other professional reference sources

Website content development and migration

  • Develops and migrates content for the Town's intranet and external website by drafting, editing, and entering content into the content management system (CMS), ensuring that all content aligns with branding, the corporate writing style guide, web content best practices, and accessibility standards.

  • Coordinates the migration of content performed by other members of the team, including providing training and coaching on CMS, assigning content to be migrated, tracking progress, and helping to troubleshoot issues.

  • Works with the technical team and vendor to develop internal user manuals and instructions for commonly performed tasks with the CMS, and trains the Communications team as identified by the Manager, Strategic Communications.

  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders, including department representatives and subject matter experts, to gather content requirements, obtain approvals, and ensure accurate and timely content updates during the migration process.

  • Reviews and refines web content for clarity, accessibility, SEO optimization, and consistency, ensuring it aligns with the Town’s communication goals and enhances user experience on both the intranet and public-facing website.

  • Works with the web development team to troubleshoot any technical issues related to content migration, providing guidance on content formatting, functionality, and integration with other systems as necessary.

Post-migration website content maintenance and optimization

  • Regularly reviews and updates post-migration website and intranet content to ensure accuracy, relevance, and alignment with the Town’s strategic goals, addressing content gaps and ensuring timely updates for critical information.

  • Monitors website performance and user engagement using analytics tools, making data-driven recommendations to improve content effectiveness, SEO, and user experience.

  • Coordinates ongoing website testing to enhance user experience and support continuous improvement of content engagement.

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Digital Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related discipline.

  • 5+ years of experience in digital communications, website/digital content writing, or a related industry

  • Experience in planning and executing website campaigns, including microsites, web pages, and landing pages

  • Advanced proficiency in using content management systems to create, edit, and publish web content

  • Experience in planning, creating, and uploading web content for public sector organizations is preferred

  • Post-secondary certificate in Digital Content, Professional Writing, Communications, or equivalent is an asset

  • Demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

  • Proficient skills in Adobe Creative Suite applications, with a focus on image editing and formatting for the web

  • Proficient with website Content Management Systems (CMS)

  • Strong orientation for learning and using new technology and software applications

  • Demonstrated ability to transform complex, jargon-heavy content into engaging, succinct, plain language for various audiences

  • Proven ability to prioritize and manage high volumes of work with large cross-functional and cross-departmental teams

  • Strong negotiation, presentation, and partnership development skills

  • Superior written/verbal communication skills and excellent attention to detail

  • Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and issues management

  • Strong knowledge of Canadian Press Style, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0, and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) regulations

  • Experience using Govstack, i-create, or SharePoint content management systems is an asset
