Job description

A rare opportunity to master both heritage and cutting-edge water treatment technology — all in one extraordinary facility.

Are you ready to launch or elevate your career in water treatment? We are seeking a motivated and curious operator to join our tight-knit team at one of Canada's most distinctive water treatment facilities — a Class IV plant located on CFB Wainwright, serving both the military base and the community of Wainwright, Alberta.

This is not your average operator role. Our plant uniquely combines time-tested conventional treatment (flocculation, clarification, and multimedia filtration) with state-of-the-art Veolia micro-filtration membranes — giving you hands-on experience with the full spectrum of water treatment technology. You will be mentored, supported, and set up for success from day one.

Job Description

What You'll Do Every Day

Step into a dynamic and varied role where no two shifts are exactly the same. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct thorough daily equipment inspections — instrument verification, cleaning, and calibration across the entire facility
  • Lead laboratory work and water quality sampling — measuring turbidity, residual chlorine, pH, ammonia, and more at multiple locations throughout the distribution system
  • Monitor and control the SCADA system — keeping a real-time eye on plant performance and responding proactively to alarms
  • Manage and optimize chemical dosing — including Potassium Permanganate, Sulphuric Acid, Gas Chlorine, Aqueous Ammonia, and Polymer
  • Operate and maintain GE membrane micro-filtration systems — including weekly Clean-in-Place (CIP) procedures across 3 units
  • Perform preventative maintenance — oil changes, filter changes, greasing, pneumatic valve rebuilds, and more as part of the monthly PM program
  • Execute daily QA rounds at two reservoirs and a pump house to verify system integrity
  • Backwash 4 dual-media sand filters on a scheduled and demand basis
  • Manage chemical inventory and initiate procurement as needed
  • Accurately enter operational data into the Simo Management Water Database
  • Collaborate with on-site contractors and support DND-requested testing protocols
  • Contribute to a safe, clean, and professional work environment — janitorial duties and groundskeeping included
Qualifications

What You Bring

We value potential as much as credentials. If you hold any of the following, we want to hear from you:

  • Water Treatment Level 1 certification or higher (required)
  • Water Distribution certification (a strong asset)
  • Canadian residency for a minimum of 5 years — required to qualify for the industrial security screening program for CFB Wainwright site access
  • A drive to learn, a strong safety mindset, and pride in doing quality work
Additional Information

Why You'll Love This Role

  • Rare dual-technology exposure — operate both legacy and modern systems in a single facility
  • Meaningful work — safeguard drinking water for Canadian Armed Forces personnel and the Wainwright community
  • Fully funded certifications — Confined Space, First Aid, Fall Arrest, TDG, Chlorine Handling and more, all provided
  • Supportive team culture — you won't be thrown in the deep end; your growth is our priority
  • Unique work location — gain experience operating within a federal military installation
