Job summary

Municipality of the County of Inverness is seeking a Maintenance Labourer in Strathlorne, NS to support water and sewer system maintenance and related duties. The role involves physical work, site travel, and occasional after-hours emergencies.

You will assist with repairs, traffic control, and equipment operation while upholding safety and quality standards. A valid Class 5 licence and basic training are preferred, with opportunities to grow in municipal infrastructure work.

Qualifications

• Experience in municipal sewer and water system repair and installation.
• Familiarity with road construction and utility work is an asset.
• Demonstrated commitment to a safe work culture and training.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and work independently or in a team.
• Comfort using maintenance and landscaping tools/equipment.
• Maintain discretion and confidentiality for municipality matters.

Responsibilities

• Assist with maintenance/repair of municipal water and wastewater systems (manholes, valves, hydrants, service connections).
• Support sewer/water hook-ups, shutoff repairs, and valve maintenance.
• Participate in pre-work assessments and toolbox talks.
• Assist with traffic control setup and safety reviews.
• Perform manual tasks (shoveling, digging, backfilling).
• Organize inventory and keep the service bay/areas tidy.
• Perform asphalt cuts, sidewalk repairs, and restoration after work.
• Sidewalk snow removal (winter).
• Support Buildings & Grounds tasks as needed.
• Participate in safety, operational, and training meetings.
• Operate municipal vehicles with GPS; report GPS issues.
• Promote safe, positive workplace culture; contribute to continuous improvement.
• Maintain courteous public relations; respond to emergencies.
