Barr Engineering and Environmental Science Canada Ltd. in Calgary is seeking a senior water resources engineer to join our hybrid team. You will support hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for rural and urban settings, and contribute to design of stormwater facilities, rivers, dams, and levees.

The role emphasizes client coordination, reporting, and mentoring junior staff. A strong track record in project leadership and professional engineering registration with APEGA is expected.

Qualifications

  • B.Sc. in civil, environmental, or related engineering with a focus on water resources.
  • 10+ years of water resources experience with a focus on hydrology, hydraulics, or water quality.
  • P.Eng. registration or eligibility for immediate registration with APEGA.
  • Experience with hydrologic and hydraulic modelling software.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada without sponsorship.

Job description

The role - what you'll do

Barr is seeking a senior water resources engineer to join our Calgary team. In this hybrid role, you will support hydrologic analysis for rural and urban settings; hydraulic analysis and design related to rivers, streams, conveyances, dams, and other hydraulic structures; impact assessments; and natural channel design, as well as work with clients, permitting agencies, and public officials. Assignments may also include leading project teams with a variety of technical backgrounds and disciplines. A successful person in this role will have strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. They must possess a flexible working style and be willing to occasionally modify their schedule to meet deadlines and/or client needs.

Your impact - key responsibilities
  • Technical knowledge: strong technical knowledge of water resources engineering, including hydrologic and hydraulic analysis of rivers, flood control, and conveyance systems. Experience with modelling, analysis, and design related to stormwater infrastructure, rivers and streams, floodplains, hydraulic structures, dams, and levees.
  • Reporting: assist with the preparation of technical reports, plans, and specifications and work with clients, permitting agencies, and public officials.
  • Project and task management: assist with planning, coordinating, and executing projects. Help ensure project milestones are met and provide regular updates to project managers and clients. Perform QA/QC and provide mentoring and technical guidance to junior staff.
About the opportunity
  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Calgary, Alberta, office.

About you - required core competencies
  • Education: B.Sc. in civil, environmental, or related engineering fields with a focus on water resources.
  • Experience: 10+ years of water resources engineering experience with a focus on hydrology, hydraulics, or water quality.
    • Experience leading projects and building teams.
  • P.Eng. registration or eligibility for immediate registration with APEGA.
  • Software: experience and knowledge of hydrologic modelling and 1D and 2D hydraulic modelling software.
  • Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship by Barr Engineering and Environmental Science Canada Ltd., now or in the future.
Helpful additional experience (not required)
  • M.Sc. or PhD in civil or environmental engineering with a focus on hydrology and/or hydraulics.
  • Experience in business development and client management.
  • Working knowledge of GIS and CADD software.
  • Experience with site development design, plans, and/or specifications.
  • Construction observation, fieldwork, and surveying experience.
Compensation

Anticipated range of $120,000-$170,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance.
