As a Water Resources Engineer-In-Training, you will join our Calgary or Edmonton, Alberta office and work with our growing group of engineers throughout Alberta. The Water Resources Engineer-in-Training will work on a variety of surface water related projects under the guidance of intermediate and senior water resources and hydrotechnical engineers and will be a key member of our team. The successful applicant will be involved in a broad range of hydrology, aquatics and water resources engineering projects with responsibilities including:

  • Active participation in maintaining Montrose’s strong safety culture
  • Participate in water resources engineering projects by contributing technical knowledge and developing skills in areas including river engineering and surface water management
  • Complete hydrologic and hydraulic calculations and use of standard models (previous experience will be considered as asset)
  • Assist in field assessments including flow and water quality monitoring, topographic and bathymetric surveying, and hydrotechnical assessments of watercourse crossings (e.g., pipelines and culverts)
  • Complete basic design and assessment of erosion protection and sediment control measures
  • Aid in field engineering and construction monitoring
  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports, technical specifications for engineering designs and cost estimates
  • Help multidisciplinary project teams to achieve project goals and objectives
  • Conduct fieldwork in both urban and remote environments in all weather conditions

What We Are Looking For

  • Degree or technical diploma in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Engineering or other applicable field
  • 0 to 4 years of related experience
  • Registered as an EIT (Engineer in Training) with APEGA or another provincial body
  • Basic understanding of open channel and pipe flow hydraulics, stormwater management system design, and river engineering
  • Strong analytical and field capabilities
  • Demonstrated verbal, writing, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Commitment to individual initiative, critical thinking, and problems solving
  • Possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license and a clean driving record
  • Willing to travel and undertake field work in remote locations
  • Other qualifications that are not required, but would be considered assets:
    • M.Sc. or other relevant post-graduate degree
    • Experience working with relevant computer software applications, including for: GIS and remote sensing (ArcGIS, QGIS), Hydrological and/or hydraulic modeling (HEC-RAS), Survey and Design (AutoCAD), and Graphics (Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw)
    • Knowledge of Federal, Provincial and Municipal environmental regulations and standards
    • Experience in and knowledge of river engineering design concepts, surface water management; complimentary skill sets such as hydrology or aquatic biology
    • Previous experience in the consulting sector
