Job description

This is semi-skilled mechanical work involving the operation of equipment related to potable water disinfection and distribution. Work is performed according to well-defined procedures under supervision. The employee must work on a rotating shift basis, including special shifts for standpipe operation. Due to the 24-hour service requirement, overtime and emergency work are expected. Reasonable accommodations are available for individuals with disabilities.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Keeping accurate records and completing required forms for the water distribution department.
  2. Operating power-driven pumps and monitoring control panels with gauges and meters.
  3. Adding chemicals such as chlorine for water disinfection, adjusting automatic injection devices, and regulating valves and pumps to maintain proper levels.
  4. Monitoring tank levels, adjusting valves for filling and usage, and making flow adjustments under supervision.
  5. Inspecting equipment, reading meters, taking samples, and recording data.
  6. Performing minor maintenance and adjustments on water plant equipment, including working with PVC pipes and painting.
  7. Maintaining the appearance and safety of work areas by cutting brush and cleaning pathways.

Requirements:

  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment during duties.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Availability for weekend shifts, overtime, and emergency response.
  • Access to a home telephone or immediate communication device.
  • Reliable transportation to the workplace.
  • Maintenance of all issued equipment, including communication devices.
  • Valid V.I. driver's license.

Educational requirement: High school diploma with courses in mechanical trades and two years of responsible mechanical and maintenance work experience.
