Job Description


Key Responsibilities:
  1. Adjusts, inspects, and evaluates processes and equipment that control the operation and effectiveness of water and wastewater systems to optimize performance, ensure regulatory compliance, and minimize adverse impacts, considering costs, equipment capabilities, environmental impacts, and OH&S.
  2. Operates and monitors system process equipment and related components, including valves, gates, pumps, compressors, engines, motors, HVAC systems, and chemical dosing equipment.
  3. Makes process adjustments, operational decisions, and responds to alarm conditions to maintain efficient, compliant, and safe operations within established limits.
  4. Maintains records of all process and work area activities using manual or computerized systems.
  5. Ensures efficient operation and regulatory compliance of all processes within water and wastewater systems, and promotes team performance.
  6. Collects samples, performs routine laboratory tests, analyses, and records results.
  7. Interprets laboratory results and makes necessary adjustments.
  8. Identifies operational changes and implements corrective actions or troubleshooting.
  9. Utilizes tools like Process Control System (PCS), SCADA, Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and Work Management System (WMS).
  10. Performs preventative maintenance and diagnostics, monitoring equipment for issues like vibration or high temperatures.
  11. Monitors equipment performance and maintains operations using CLAIR (clean, lubricate, adjust, inspect, repair).

Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
  • Understanding of environmental regulations relevant to water and wastewater facilities.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices in operating and maintaining wastewater treatment plants, collection systems, and water treatment plants.
  • Ability to work with automation systems and interpret process data.
  • Skill in record keeping, sampling, and analytical procedures.
  • Basic mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation knowledge.
  • Understanding of occupational hazards and safety precautions, including chemical handling and confined space procedures.
  • Basic computer skills and effective communication abilities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Teamwork and continuous learning mindset.

Hours of Work:
  • 40-hour workweek, including weekends and holidays as required.
  • Rotating on-call schedule when necessary.

Licensing Requirements:
  • Valid MECP Water/Wastewater operating certificates/licenses as required.
  • Valid Class G Driver's License.

Education Requirements:
  • Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Post-secondary education in an environmental or technical trade field is an asset.

Physical Demands:
  • Primarily walking, standing, sitting, and driving.
  • Ability to lift up to 55 pounds.
  • Must use hands for handling, reach, and communicate effectively.
  • Occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, and confined space entry.
  • Visual acuity for process monitoring.

Working Environment:

Full-time, permanent position primarily in operational and maintenance environments, with outdoor work in various weather conditions and vehicle operation as needed.
