Job description

TransAqua serves the three area Municipalities of Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview with a major network of collector sewers, Wastewater Pumping Stations, a Wastewater Treatment Facility and two Composting Facilities. TransAqua is responsible for the environmental stewardship associated with wastewater treatment, planning and regulatory requirements and is continuously supporting regional planning, economic development and quality of life for the communities of Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview. Its mission is “To collect and treat wastewater in a reliable, cost-efficient and environmentally responsible manner.” The Greater Moncton Wastewater Commission is an equal opportunity Employer that currently has a vacancy for a Class 3 WWT Operator position to begin full time employment ideally on July 7, 2025, but the start date is to be negotiated.

Job Overview:

Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, the Class 3 WWT Operator is responsible for the operational performance of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTF) and Collection System and remote lift stations. This person is also responsible for ensuring work is carried out safely, properly, efficiently, effectively, economically, and in accordance with all pertinent legislation, regulations, policies, and standard operating procedures. This position, as do all team members, carries a responsibility to nurture, promote, and champion TransAqua’s safety program.

Employees at this classification also have a greater responsibility for contingency planning and emergency preparedness activities, program planning and development, planning and delivery of more complex projects, detailed reporting and oral presentation of conclusions, and developing a knowledge base of emerging technologies.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Operate unit operations and processes of the Wastewater Treatment Facility, Collection System, and remote lift stations in coordination with operators.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate work activities related to wastewater collection, transmission, and treatment in support of operational goals and objectives. Understand and be capable of preparing monthly reports of operations and maintain adequate records as required.
  • Lead the development, review, and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures and Material Safety Data Sheets with personnel.
  • Review and maintain all Emergency Response SOPs.
  • Assist in the development of operations and maintenance manuals.
  • Responsible for process trending analysis and identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Calibrate and maintain process instrumentation.
  • Instruct and guide staff in the delivery of services with input and support from the Operations Manager.
  • Participate in contingency planning and emergency preparedness activities.
  • Assist the Operations Manager in directing emergency response operations in accordance with plans and established procedures to ensure the GMWC systems are fully functional.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of training courses.
  • Respond/inform/coordinate actions required to address improper operations identified during daily checks or alarms generated by the SCADA.
  • Assist the Operations Manager with the purchase of process equipment, materials, fuel, chemicals, etc.
  • Assist in the preparation of the emergency contact sheet for staff, area municipalities, and septage haulers.
  • Oversee work by local contractors hired to carry out work for GMWC. Review and confirm the accuracy of contractor timesheets, material quantities, and submit to the Operations Manager.
  • Provide direction or supervision when working at the wastewater treatment facility or collector system when the work requires more than one person, including other operators and/or maintenance personnel.
  • Maintain open communications with the Operations Manager regarding wastewater treatment processes and collector system operations, and make recommendations for repairs and improvements.
  • Set an example for professional conduct, responsibility, and accountability.
  • Attend all planning and operations team meetings and emphasize the importance of effective teamwork.
  • Understand how assigned projects relate to wastewater objectives and provide input into future wastewater initiatives.
  • Participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Ensure wastewater operations operate in accordance with the Approval to Operate Terms and Conditions.
  • Perform all work in conformance with Occupational Safety and Health Act regulations.
  • Serve as duty operator on the regular plant on-call schedule.
  • Coordinate with on-call personnel to develop and post the on-call list for the calendar year.
  • Conduct tours of the facility as scheduled.

Qualifications:

The preferred candidate:

  • Post-secondary education in a relevant trade or technical field.
  • Minimum two years of related experience.
  • Class 3 WWT and Class 2 WWC Certification.

Certifications considered assets:

  • 2 years of Direct Responsible Charge experience.
  • Confined Space Entry and Rescue Certification.
  • WHMIS, Emergency First Aid / CPR, Fall Arrest Certification.
  • Experience with heavy equipment.
  • Ability to liaise with key relationships, risk management, and demonstrate integrity, confidentiality, and accountability.
  • Analytical, planning, prioritization, and communication skills.
  • Bilingual in French/English is an asset.
