WASTEWATER COLLECTIONS OPERATOR

Currently, the City of Belleville has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, strategic, and dynamic individuals to join our Environmental Services Department as a Temporary Full Time Wastewater Collections Operator.Position Type: Temporary Full Time (leave backfill)

Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM plus rotating on call as applicable.
Employee Group: Union - CUPE
Salary: $28.83 - $39.46 per hour (based on certification level, see below) plus shift premium as applicable.

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Reporting to the Supervisor of Wastewater Collection, the position involves the operation of a Level III Wastewater Collection System including rotating on-call responsibilities.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Control flow or pressure of wastewater in a wastewater facility
  • Monitor gauges, meters and control valves related to disinfection, treatment or collection of wastewaters
  • Start and stop pumps, engines and generators to control and adjust flow
  • Open and close valves and gates, whether done manually or by remote control
  • Maintain logs (e.g. Shift logs) or other forms of record-keeping related to treatment and collection activities in the facility, make entries into such logs/records including meter and gauge readings maintained in a proper and legible manner.
  • Operating wastewater lift station
  • Participate in the maintenance of the wastewater collection system including Sewer cleaning by hydraulic and mechanical methods, sewer lateral roddings, maintenance hole inspections, wet well cleaning.
  • Repair the wastewater collection system components including mains/force mains, laterals, maintenance hole structures.
  • Participate in the maintenance of the storm water collection system including the cleaning of storm water mains and catch basins by hydraulic and mechanical means.

  • Install new lateral, catch basins
  • Conduct sampling and participate in investigative activities, when required.
  • Handle customer complaints as per applicable SOP’s.
  • Work in confined spaces and from heights.
  • Assume OIC responsibilities, if required, when suitably experienced.
  • Clearly and effectively communicate operational information with supervisors and coworkers.
  • Clean and maintain work environment in a hygienic state.
  • Perform on-call duties (24/7) as part of a weekly rotation.
  • Be available within 30 minutes response time when on-call.
  • Participate in health and safety audits and inspections

EDUCATION/SPECIALIZED TRAINING/SKILLS:

Essential (minimum) Qualifications:
  • Successful completion of a minimum two (2) year post-secondary program in Civil Engineering, Environmental, Electrical or Mechanical field or other suitable equivalent that would enable operator certification up to the level of the facility (in accordance with 0. Reg. 129/04 as amended from time to time).
  • Valid OIT in Wastewater Subsystem MECP Certification as per OREG 129/04, with the ability to obtain licensing to the level of the Facility (Level III or greater).
  • Valid Class DZ Driver’s license with safe driving record, to be held and maintained.
Asset (preferred) Qualifications:
  • Level IV Wastewater MECP Certification.
  • Working knowledge of provincial Acts and associated Regulations.
  • Working knowledge of infrastructure and construction practices.
  • Working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act with emphasis on trenching, shoring, and confined space entry.
  • Current First Aid, CPR and WHMIS training.
  • Basic computer skills including email, MS Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Excavating experience.
  • Ability to complete tasks involving heavy pushing, pulling, and lifting on a regular basis; work in an uncontrolled environment/conditions; work in a construction environment (i.e., traffic, uneven ground), ability recognize hazards and be able to assist in mitigating and controlling hazards.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
Essential (minimum) Qualifications:
  • Operational experience in a Large Municipal Residential System or Industrial, mechanical, or electrical maintenance exposure.
  • Demonstrated exceptional mechanical aptitude.
  • Hand and power tool use.
Asset (preferred) Qualifications:
  • General sampling experience.
  • Operational troubleshooting and maintenance experience.
  • Large equipment operational experience ie. Jet Rodder, backhoe, loader, etc.
