A leading company is seeking a Waste Management Technician to oversee the daily operations of the waste transfer station in M’Chigeeng. This role involves directing traffic, ensuring compliance with waste policies, educating community members, and maintaining site cleanliness while working outdoors in various weather conditions. Candidates should have relevant experience and a high school diploma, with a preference for applicants fluent in Anishinabek or Ojibwe languages.

Position Summary
The Waste Management Technician is responsible for overseeing daily operations of the M’Chigeeng First Nation’s waste transfer station. Key duties include directing traffic, assisting community members with proper waste disposal, ensuring compliance with waste management policies, maintaining site cleanliness, and coordinating with waste haulers. The role requires adherence to safety protocols and effective communication to promote environmental stewardship within the community.
Essential Functions
Prepare the site for opening each working day in accordance with established hours of operation and secure andlock all buildings, tanks, and gates prior to leaving the site.
Ensure the site is safe for the community to use and all areas for placement of waste are easily accessible to the users.
Directing traffic flow as community members enter the Waste Transfer Station Site.
Greeting community members and waste haul drivers at the station.
Monitor and confirm that only M’Chigeeng First Nation members are using the facility unless otherwise specifically authorized by Chief and Council.
View and assess incoming loads of waste. Reject unacceptable items. Direct users to the appropriate and designated bins for placement of waste or recyclables and other divertible materials. Signs denoting which waste is accepted or declined at the Transfer Station are posted near the bins.
Educate community members on proper sorting procedure and disposal as needed.
Monitor when waste and recycling bins become full and redirect members to new bins and/or contact appropriate waste haulers if an additional waste pickup is required outside of the regular scheduled pick up.
Sort any waste placement errors made by members to ensure both waste and recycling bins do not contain wastes (contaminants) that will not be accepted at either the off-reserve Landfill or the off-reserve Materials Recovery Facility (recycling facility).
Coordinate with waste haulers when loading/unloading materials that require additional equipment. Work with waste haulers to load/pack materials to optimize shipping.
Diligently record date, time, estimate volume, type/category of waste, waste hauling contractor and waste destination/processing facility information whenever waste and diverted waste is hailed off the transfer station site.
The attendant is to ensure that all waste leaving the transfer station site will go to approved and licensed waste disposal or material recovery facilities.
Update Daily Activity Log as required including any facility safety or operational deficiencies or needed repairs to the Public Works Manager.
Maintain site facilities in a clean and orderly manner as is practical. Perform windblown and other litter control within the facility on a regular basis (approximately 2-3 times a week).
Ensure the transfer station pavement/surface is clean and free from debris and ice to minimize slipping hazards to the users.
Abide by safe operational practices set out in “Used Oil Storage Tank”/”Household Hazardous Waste” sections of the manual.
Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): proper safety footwear, hard hat, eye and ear protection, safety vest, face masks and respirators, appropriate gloves and hazmat suit for handling Used Oil and Household Hazardous Wastes.
Other duties may be assigned to the attendant by the Public Works Manager or designate.
Working Conditions:
The attendant will be working outdoors for the majority of the scheduled working day.
Exposure to dust, odours, on a continuous basis.
Exposure to moderate to severe weather conditions (rain, snow, heat, humidity, etc.).
Frequently lifting up to 50lbs.
Standing for long periods of time.
Bending, crouching, walking, lifting items overhead.
Qualifications
Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum one (1) year experience in landscaping, horticulture, or related field.
Valid G2 class licence.
Experience with horticulture equipment and powered hand tools.
Demonstrated customer service skills and ability to deal directly with the public.
Ability to work outdoors and in inclement weather.
Ability to work weekends and morning and afternoon shifts if required.

Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
Valid Drivers Licence .
Ability to operate a snow plow, backhoe, and forklift.
Excellent time management and organizational skills.
Understanding and fluency of Anishinabek language is a strong asset or a willingness to learn.
Must be flexible to work long hours in peak periods, evenings and weekends as required.
Understanding and fluency of Ojibwe is an asset.
Knowledge of Anishinaabe culture, traditions, customs, and practices.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Must have or be willing to obtain Standard First Aid and CPR Certification.
CRC is required, current thirty (30) days original or certified copy.
