The primary function of this position is to lead and represent analytics across the Canadian operation. About the team :

This role will work as part of both Markel’s onshore team in Canada and the International Portfolio Analytics team headquartered in London.

The International Portfolio Analytics team is a multi-functional, empowered, creative, and autonomous team working across the entirety of Markel International. It is embedded within the underwriting business and represented within the Wholesale and National Markets Underwriting Leadership teams. Its focus includes Portfolio Management, Advanced Analytics, Data & Insights, and market-leading Pricing Model deployment.

The opportunity:

The primary function of this position is to lead and represent analytics across the Canadian operation. Responsibilities include integrating segmentation into underwriting, discovering new methods and data for performance analysis, and advancing the use of Machine Learning and other data science techniques. This will be with the support of local Operations and the wider International Portfolio Analytics team.

Key stakeholders include the Canadian Leadership Team, Product Line Leaders, Field Underwriters, Underwriting, Finance (including Planning and Analysis), and the Actuarial function.

The role will support the following underwriting functions within Markel Canada:

• Cyber insurance for various business and industry types
• Environmental risks
• Casualty Products including Excess and Umbrella
• Sectors
• Digital risks
• Property
• Professional and Financial Risks (PFR): traditional and emerging professional indemnity, management liability, financial institutions, patents, libel & slander

What we ask of you :

• Support active portfolio and data management across Canada.
• Ensure portfolio management and profitability are optimized by making recommendations to Product Line Leaders and Field staff.
• Monitor key performance drivers and support performance improvements and remedial actions.
• Participate in quarterly business planning, set up standard Quarterly Business Reviews, and align them with business strategies.
• Lead development of strategic and predictive analytics, tools, and insights for smarter underwriting decisions, advocating for data science and automation.
• Oversee regional Data & Analytics Team, improving data quality and incorporating external data where appropriate, ensuring alignment with overall strategy.
• Prioritize pricing initiatives, maturing automated rating and supporting rating model monitoring and parameterization.
• Collaborate across teams, sharing knowledge and resolving issues to meet business priorities.
• Represent the Portfolio Analytics team, providing management information to leadership.
• Foster a culture of business-driven experimentation for value creation.
• Support and design financial growth models and actuals vs. plans.

What you will bring to the role :

• Strong technical actuarial skills in commercial lines, with independent problem-solving ability.
• Understanding of regional products, classes, and the specialty insurance market.
• Experience with predictive analytics and Machine Learning in Property & Casualty insurance.
• Excellent communication and data visualization skills.
• Ability to influence stakeholders and communicate complex ideas effectively.
• Proven project leadership and delivery skills.
• Solid understanding of Microsoft Office, especially Excel, with experience in data manipulation and analysis; knowledge of SQL, Python/R is desirable but not essential.
