Job description

Position Title: Volunteer Resources Manager
Term: Permanent Position, Full-time

With one of North America’s premier outdoor music festivals as its signature event, the Winnipeg Folk Festival is a year-round, not-for-profit arts organization that presents live music, arts events designed to benefit the community.

The Winnipeg Folk Festival is seeking a passionate and motivated team player to lead the recruitment, training, mobilization and retention of 2500+ volunteers. This role ensures the festival delivers an exceptional experience for attendees and volunteers by building a robust, inclusive, and responsive volunteer program. The Volunteer Resources Manager works collaboratively across all departments, leads volunteer department staff, oversees a team of volunteer coordinators, and champions best practices in volunteer engagement. The Manager also provides internal HR support to the Executive Director.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Volunteer Resources Manager is generally responsible for:

  • Identifying the volunteer needs of the organization and mobilizing volunteer resources accordingly
  • Offering meaningful experiences including support, training and a sense of reward to WFF volunteers
  • Developing and managing partnerships between volunteers and staff

Within their role on the Winnipeg Folk Festival management team, the manager:

  • Represents volunteer issues, concerns and perspectives to staff and board
  • Manages staff in volunteer department and integrates festival contract staff into broader HR Plans
  • Contributes to budget development and management
  • Supports the development and execution of overall organizational strategy

The manager will lead the department in:

  • Engaging and supporting volunteer coordinators
  • Volunteer recruitment, screening and training
  • Managing volunteer communications and related problem solving
  • Ongoing assessing and prioritizing needs of volunteer program
  • Ensuring program has equitable, inclusive and accessible volunteer opportunities that include participation by youth and newcomers
  • Maintaining the volunteer management database and learning management system
  • Ensuring the organization is meeting or exceeding national and/or international standards in volunteer policies, programs, and procedures

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years of experience in volunteer and/or human resource management
  • Education/training in volunteer management and/or human resources management
  • Excellent computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office and CRM systems
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks
  • Strong leadership skills

Assets

  • Experience in working with festivals or major public events
  • Experience in working in non-profit sector
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in volunteer programs
  • Conflict and mediation skills
  • Experience in staff leadership
  • Experience in using learning management systems
  • Knowledge of the Winnipeg Folk Festival

Work Schedule

The hours of work generally fall between 9 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday, a 35-hour week with an unpaid lunch. There is a need for schedule flexibility related to evening and weekend events, training sessions and meetings with volunteers. During the festival, the selected candidate will be required to work long hours in an outdoor environment.

Compensation

The starting salary range is $65,200 – $81,500, commensurate with experience. Winnipeg Folk Festival has an excellent benefits plan.
