Position Overview

Our client is a highly successful Canadian asset management firm with an expansive global and national platform. The firm invests in a variety of long-lived asset classes held through a growing portfolio of private funds and operating publicly listed entities.

Currently, they are seeking a Vice President, Finance to lead a growing team focused on their private equity special investments strategy and funds. Reporting to the SVP, the VP will drive fund operations and reporting for existing and new funds under this strategy. The role is highly visible, with an extensive cross-functional interface with senior executives and various diverse challenges. This is an attractive opportunity for a seasoned CPA with extensive fund operations exposure and a builder mentality to make their mark in a growth-oriented investor with significant upward mobility.

Role Responsibilities

  • Manage fund operations, including investment closes, liquidity management, investor queries, forecasting and compliance.
  • Ensure accurate and timely quarterly reporting is provided to investors and other users, including preparing financial statements under US GAAP Investment Company Accounting, as well as fund and investment performance tracking.
  • Oversee ad-hoc reporting, analysis and other deliverables to the limited partners.
  • Review public reporting templates prepared in accordance with IFRS.
  • Oversee the investor capital call and distribution process, ensuring distributions are sent to limited partners in a timely manner and that capital calls are coordinated appropriately with transaction close timelines.
  • Present quarterly results to senior management and be the key content for any finance related questions related to this strategy.
  • Oversee the team’s interaction with various service providers to ensure the providers are being leveraged as much as possible and provide deliverables in a format that facilitates efficient review.
  • Review valuations of fund investments on a quarterly basis.
  • Review accounting packages for individual legal entities.
  • Prepare internal and external audit requests and maintain appropriate control documentation.
  • Supervise and develop a team of finance professionals and contribute to a culture of operational excellence.
  • Provide oversight to the team of process improvements to improve the reporting process and ensure new funds are set up with a best-in-practice approach, leveraging technology where applicable.

Desired Qualifications

  • University degree in Finance, Economics or Accounting.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive work experience in finance and/or accounting functions.
  • Experience in private funds, knowledge of the investment management industry, and experience dealing with complex ownership structures is an asset.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and initiative.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving ability.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with internal and external clients, including service providers.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, complex, fast-paced environment, to adapt quickly and to manage changing priorities.
  • Superior communication skills (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail oriented and possesses a strong work ethic; ability to multi-task and execute a wide range of assignments; strong time management skills.
  • Strong financial systems experience, including advanced Excel.
  • Self-motivated and proactive, with respect to both managing workload and professional development.
