The Canadian Medical Association invites applications for the position of Vice Dean, Clinical Academic Affairs at Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. The successful candidate will lead clinical departments, manage key relationships, and ensure a high standard of academic and clinical excellence, supported by prior experience in medical education and strong communication skills. This role is vital for the management of faculty affairs, interactions with health authorities, and advancing the school’s social accountability. A continuing position is offered at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
We are inviting applications for the position of Vice Dean, Clinical Academic Affairs (CAA). As a member of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry Vice-Decanal leadership team, the Vice-Dean, CAA is the senior faculty member who provides high-level linkages between Schulich Medicine & Dentistry Senior Leadership Council (SLC) and the senior leadership of the School’s partners (including, but not limited to, London Health Sciences Centre, St. Joseph’s Health Care London, Windsor Regional Hospital, and Hôtel Dieu Grace Healthcare).
The Vice Dean, CAA will provide leadership and be a key resource for clinical departments and Chairs. Responsibilities include leading processes and initiatives such as academic promotions, professionalism, wellbeing, continuing professional development, faculty and leadership development, and learner experience. The Vice Dean, CAA will advise Faculty Affairs and clinical departments on College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) matters. The incumbent is also expected to collaborate with Schulich leaders to advance the social accountability priorities of Schulich.
The incumbent will play a lead role in managing relationships between Schulich Medicine & Dentistry and regional health authorities. They will represent the Dean at Western University, hospital meetings, external agencies, and provincial commitments related to faculty or health system interactions.
Qualifications :
The successful candidate should have a strong track record in leadership, research, education, and clinical care, with a reputation for effective interpersonal and administrative skills. Significant senior administrative leadership experience, especially in engagement, communication, collaboration, quality improvement, service delivery, performance excellence, and program management, is required. An established scholarly record is essential.
Knowledge and experience with regulatory agencies such as CPSO, RCPSC, and CFPC are necessary. Knowledge of legal frameworks, contracts, and hospital by-laws is an asset. Experience in policy development is also desirable.
The candidate should preferably be an academic clinician with at least an MD or equivalent, eligible for licensure in Ontario, and certified or eligible for certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Preferably, candidates will hold the rank of Associate or Full Professor with a sustained record in medical education or research and substantial administrative experience in medical education or health leadership.
The appointment will be a continuing (Clinical Academic) position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in a department at Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.
Compensation will primarily come from fees for service, alternate funding plans, and academic support, aligned with standard funding for Academic Clinical Leaders.
Term : The position is initially a 5-year term, renewable once.
