GENERAL SUMMARY :

Veterinary Technician, I work under the direct supervision of the Executive Director of Lab Animal Sciences and general guidance of the senior staff. Veterinary Technician, I assist veterinary staff in the documentation and veterinary clinical care of all laboratory animal health cases. The goal of this department is to collaborate with and provide expert support to our research scientists in the discovery, characterization, and development of novel therapeutic products for a variety of human diseases. As a Laboratory Animal Sciences (LAS) team, we are dedicated to providing excellent animal care, progressive veterinary medicine, and expert lab animal science knowledge.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Assist veterinary staff in the documentation and veterinary clinical care of all laboratory animal health cases identified by technical staff and / or veterinarians. Effectively communicate any animal issues to veterinary staff and Study Directors.
  • Monitor animal health by performing rounds, responding to animal health reports, and following schedules. Maintain appropriate medical records for each animal in accordance with study and regulatory requirements.
  • Consult with veterinarians and veterinary staff on treatment options. Generate animal treatment records and perform, track and schedule follow-ups.
  • Perform routine veterinary technical and husbandry skills including but not limited to the following :
  • Safely and correctly handle and restrain animals for observation, routine animal manipulations, and procedures;
  • Administer medications by oral, topical, and injectable routes of administration;
  • Verify drugs / medications prior to use and calculate dose administrations;
  • Responsible for routine animal manipulations and administration of fluids or other treatments as required;
  • Bandage / wrapping techniques;
  • Nail / teeth clipping / trimming;
  • Monitor critical care animals (i.e., place IVs, monitor fluids, etc.);
  • Specimen collection such as blood and feces;
  • TB testing, weighing, physical examinations, radiographs, and other technical procedures as needed;
  • May be responsible for euthanasia, tissue sampling.
  • Responsible to assess animal health and under supervision, may be responsible to provide immediate care to emergency cases.
  • May assist with minor surgical procedures.
  • Assist in keeping inventory and monitoring expiration dates of veterinary supplies.
  • May be responsible for the documentation and distribution of controlled substances under the guidance of the DEA Officer (DO).
  • Responsible for sanitization of assigned areas.
  • Independently read and understand study protocols and relevant SOPs prior to performing associated duties on designated research projects.
  • May review company guidelines and SOPs.
  • May acquire Designated Trainer role.
  • Comprehend procedures and perform tasks according to company policies and SOPs.
  • Comply with all regulatory guidelines, occupational health as well as health and safety programs, in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Education Work Experience

  • Veterinary Technology Degree (or equivalent degree) preferred.
  • 0-2 years of related experience working with animals in a pre-clinical laboratory or clinical setting; experience working with multi-species preferred.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

  • Physical dexterity to lift 50-100 lb. in weight.
  • Manual dexterity to operate facility equipment.
  • Visual acuity to handle potentially hazardous chemicals, cleaners, biologics (including, but not limited to direct handling of human byproducts and viruses) and / or sharps.

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS :

  • Biological safety level (BSL) 1 and 2 laboratory and vivarium settings.

Job Type : Full-time

Salary range : $35-40 / HR
