Job summary

Thornbury Veterinary Hospital in Ontario offers a veterinary externship program designed to provide hands-on clinical experience to students. Externs work closely with supervising veterinarians, participate in patient histories, exams, treatment planning, diagnostics, and dentistry, and may observe or perform surgeries as appropriate.

Externs gain practical skills in a modern, state-of-the-art facility and have opportunities to develop communication with the medical team, staff, and clients.

Qualifications

• Externship experience at a veterinary hospital leads to practical, hands-on clinical exposure.
• Two to eight weeks duration depending on schedules; all veterinary students are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
• Clinical portion students are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.

Responsibilities

• Gather patient histories and perform physical exams.
• Create treatment plans and perform diagnostics, dentistry, and observe or assist with surgical procedures.
• Manage medical cases and communicate with the veterinary team and clients.

Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.

Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
