Job summary

National Veterinary Associates invites veterinary students to gain hands-on experience at Gananoque Veterinary Clinic. This externship offers opportunities to work with supervising veterinarians, developing clinical skills like gathering histories, performing exams, and assisting in surgical procedures. Various animals are cared for, including pets and exotic species. The externship duration ranges from two to eight weeks, and a travel/living expense stipend may be available. An inclusive environment ensures all students are welcome to apply.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a veterinary program and in the clinical portion of education.
• Ability to participate in hands-on mentoring and teamwork.
• Skills in communication with medical teams and clients.

Responsibilities

• Gather patient histories and perform physical exams.
• Create treatment plans and assist in diagnostics.
• Observe/assist or perform surgical procedures.

Job description

At Gananoque Veterinary Clinic, our veterinarians enjoy mentorship opportunities, and our welcoming, supportive, friendly, and engaged support staff are the major highlights of our hospital. Students can expect to learn a lot through hands‑on mentoring with our amazing team.

Students will work closely with the supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

We care for cats, dogs, pocket pets, rabbits, reptiles, birds and snakes. We are a group of three hospitals that focus on building relationships with our clients.

Most externship experiences at Gananoque Veterinary Clinic range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All Veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
