Job summary

Thousand Islands Veterinary Services in Gananoque, Ontario, offers a student externship program where veterinary students work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain hands-on experience in clinical duties, including history taking, exams, treatment planning, diagnostics, dentistry, and surgery.

Externs enhance communication with the medical team and clients while practicing core clinical skills. Programs range from two to eight weeks, with a travel/living expense stipend available.

Job description

Thousand Islands Veterinary Services is a small animal GP with a doctor who has a special interest in all exotic animals. We have a team that cares about each other and is very supportive. We realize that we all were students once and we all want to support and help students to learn and grow. Our doctors enjoy teaching. We are a fun-loving group, and we are lucky enough to live in a truly beautiful part of Ontario!

Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
