Job summary

Cumberland Veterinary Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario, is seeking a veterinary assistant to support veterinarians and technicians in a busy small-animal practice.

You will assist with patient care, monitor hospitalized pets, restrain animals, assist with radiographs, and help maintain a clean, sterilized surgical area.

Part-time or full-time positions with morning, evening and Saturday shifts; benefits include health time benefits and RRSP matching, staff discount and uniform allowance.

Qualifications

• Must be a self-starter, able to multitask and a team player.
• Genuinely enjoys working with animals and can handle stressed or in-pain animals.
• Prefer 1+ years of experience, but not required.
• Ability to meet physical demands: lift up to 40 lbs, walk/stand for long periods, and restrain animals as needed.
• Works well with all levels of hospital team members.

The veterinary assistant is the entire team's primary support. Every department relies on their significant role in aiding with a variety of services to provide excellent client and patient care. Our Veterinary Assistants work independently as well as with the veterinarians and technicians to ensure the highest quality of care is provided. We are a busy small animal practice focused on treating our patients like they are our own family.

Job Description Overview

• Assist with patient care and treatment

• Restrain animals during blood draws and nail trims
• Aiding with routine diagnostic tests including taking radiographs
• Maintain & sterilize surgical instruments/equipment
• Clean/Disinfect cages, kennels, exam and treatment areas of hospital
• Feeding and walking animals

Qualifications

• Genuinely enjoys working with animals and is able to deal with them even when they are stressed, ill or in pain.
• Prefer 1+ years of experience, but not required.
• Ability to meet the physical demands of the job. Work requires lifting, carrying and restraining animals (will be assisted by other staff members in lifting animals over 40 lbs.). Should be able to lift 40lbs on own.
• Walking or standing for extended periods of time; frequently works in a bent or squatting position.
• Is experienced in the teamwork approach and works well with all levels of hospital team members.

Part time and full time work available.
Shifts will range from mornings, evenings and Saturdays.
