About The Role

As a DVM and Designated Registrant for the Practice, the Acting Designated Registrant demonstrates an exemplary standard of medicine with patients while providing medical leadership to the Practice. This DVM will be responsible for clinical work, with approximately 5-10% of the time dedicated to Designated Registrant responsibilities. As a senior member of the practice management team, the Acting Designated Registrant combines clinical expertise, a dedication to veterinary ethics and regulatory standards, solution-driven skills, emotional intelligence, and a servant leadership mindset to promote excellence in veterinary medicine.

Acting Designated Registrant Responsibilities:

  • Partner with the National Medical Director to create and maintain an environment conducive to high-quality veterinary care, ensuring adherence to practice guidelines, high standards of care, and oversight of controlled drug logging and storage.
  • Ensure practice equipment and facilities are well-maintained and escalate issues or equipment requests to the Regional Manager.
  • Assist in interviewing and training DVMs and RVTs (as applicable).
  • Help resolve team problems, concerns, and conflicts.
  • Propose solutions independently or collaborate with the VetCare Practice Care Centre team to resolve issues.

Veterinary Responsibilities:

  • Handle and treat animals with kindness, compassion, and patience, fostering a safe and secure environment.
  • Build positive client relationships through calmness, genuine care, respect, and exceptional customer service.
  • Examine, diagnose, and treat diseases or abnormal conditions.
  • Prescribe and administer medications and vaccines.
  • Collect samples and perform diagnostic tests.
  • Advocate for and provide preventive care for pets' wellness needs.
  • Treat sick or injured animals through medication, surgery, or wound care.
  • Maintain comprehensive medical records using the Practice’s systems.
  • Vaccinate animals to prevent and treat diseases.
  • Oversee the operation of the animal hospital, including billing practices.
  • Practice high standards of medicine while upholding the Code.
  • Perform routine, emergency, and post-mortem examinations.
  • Promptly notify the Practice of any complaints received from the College within 5 business days and provide relevant documentation.
  • Communicate diagnosis and treatment plans effectively to the team and clients.
  • Provide veterinary services such as obstetrics, dentistry, and euthanasia.
  • Communicate respectfully with team members and supervise animal health technologists and care workers as needed.
  • Potentially conduct veterinary research on topics like nutrition, health care products, and disease prevention.
  • Enforce government regulations related to disease control and food inspection as applicable.

Requirements:

  • 4-5 year university degree in veterinary medicine or equivalent, including pre-veterinary studies if applicable.
  • Completion of national certification examinations or equivalent.
  • Provincial license to practice in British Columbia or ability to obtain it.
  • At least 3 years of experience as a DVM, including a minimum of 1 year in leadership or supervisory roles such as practice management, regulatory policy, finance, or quality management.
  • Proficiency in internal medicine, diagnostics, and preventive care; general surgery and dentistry are preferred but not mandatory.
  • Experience in developing and implementing standards, procedures, and structures to support high-quality care and excellent client experiences.
  • Proven leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
