The Legion Foundation BC / Yukon is the charitable arm of The Royal Canadian Legion BC / Yukon Command. As a registered charity, we care for Veterans by running and providing funding directly to programs that provide; medical services & equipment, career transition services, research & treatment of trauma & PTSD, and support for Veterans experiencing homelessness or near-homelessness.

The Opportunity :

We are hiring a full-time Veteran Outreach Worker to establish partnerships, formal and informal, with homeless-serving organizations across BC to implement a referral process that ensures the unique needs of Veterans are recognized, understood and met. This newly created position will visit rural and / or remote communities to connect with shelters, food banks, RCMP detachments and hospital discharge teams (to name a few) to identify Veterans, and ensure that staff / volunteers are aware of the Veterans Homelessness Program, what supports are available and who to contact. This position will also be responsible for our HomeBase program, connecting home owners with spaces to rent with Veterans in need.

At times, the Outreach Worker will directly assist Veterans experiencing homelessness (or at-risk of experiencing homelessness) with applying for support through our program.

This position is expected to travel, within BC, up to 40% of the time and as a result, can be based in the lower mainland or the interior.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the schedule for this position is 35 hours per week. Weekend and / or evening work may be required. Due to the level of travel required, this position offers a high degree of schedule autonomy and flexibility.

Qualifications :

  • Post-secondary education, preferably in the human / social service field
  • Two (2) years of experience working in the community social services sector
  • Must be able to provide a Criminal Record Clearance for the Vulnerable Sector
  • Must have a Class 5 Driver’s Licence with a clean Driver’s Abstract
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Must be able to demonstrate understanding of the homelessness-serving sector
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1 is an asset
  • Knowledge or experience with Veterans Affairs is an asset
  • Lived experience with the military (Veteran or direct family of a Veteran) is preferred

Skills and Abilities :

  • Outstanding organizational, coordination, and time management skills
  • Proven communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Comfortable communicating by email, text message, telephone and in-person
  • Ability to develop and maintain rapport with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information, possessing strong integrity
  • Annual salary of up to $65,000
  • 15 paid vacation days annually
  • RRSP matching program
