Brightspark Ventures invests in exceptional Canadian entrepreneurs at the Seed and Series A stages. As one of the longest-standing firms in Canada, Brightspark has a history of success across four institutional venture funds, company incubation, as well as a series of Special Purpose Vehicle syndicates. Brightspark was the first cheque into leading Canadian companies like Hopper, Radian6, Vetster, Optable and Deep Sky. Brightspark currently has over $500M in Assets Under Management and an industry-leading track record, with offices in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

We are a lean investment team with 6 Partners and 1 Analyst. We are looking to grow our team with someone eager to learn the ins-and-outs of the venture capital industry by working alongside our experienced Partners.

About the Role

The Investment Associate will support our 6 Partners on all aspects of deal analysis, deal execution and company support. A particular emphasis will be put on due diligence, deal modeling, and preparing investment materials. In addition, this role will provide support to our finance team and have a unique insight into fund operations.

The Associate will have exposure to the Venture ecosystem and will attend startup networking events and represent Brightspark in the broader community.

Responsibilities

  • Support Partners throughout the deal lifecycle (sourcing, due diligence, transaction closing, support)
  • Assess investment opportunities through both qualitative and quantitative diligence (e.g. market research, financial analysis, valuation, and return modeling)
  • Provide support to Brightspark’s finance team through deal mechanic modelling, quarterly reporting, and more
  • Hands-on financial support to Portfolio companies
  • Represent the firm in meetings with startup founders and at industry events

The Ideal Candidate

This role is ideal for someone looking for a crash course into venture capital and how deals get done. It is ideal for someone with a financial / consulting background who is looking to break into the world of startups. Particular requirements include :

  • Experience with financial modelling through previous work in investment banking, PE, consulting or something similar
  • Good time management skills with the ability to work on disparate work streams and Partners concurrently
  • Accountability and the ability to manage deliverables
  • Curious and entrepreneurial mindset
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a desire to network with founders, other investors and the startup community
  • Highly organized; clear and concise oral and written communicator
  • Strong command of Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with other productivity tools is a bonus (Airtable, Affinity, etc.)
