Job description

Modern Niagara helps building owners, managers, and general contractors meet the mechanical, electrical, integrated building technology, and building services needs of their buildings across Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Southwestern Ontario, and Ottawa. We also develop custom turnkey solutions to help reach the desired outcomes. We are committed to having a positive and meaningful impact on Canada's infrastructure and on the communities where we live, learn, work, and heal.

WE BUILD FOR LIFE.

We value passion, initiative, determination, professionalism, and teamwork, and we are committed to ensuring that our teams have everything they need to succeed. Health and safety are embedded in everything we do, and as a result, our award-winning safety culture has a record that's well above industry standards.

At Modern Niagara, you will work alongside values-driven, safety-conscious, and high-impact teams in a fast-paced, innovative, and collaborative environment. Your knowledge, skills, and excellent service will help ensure that the buildings that make up Canada's infrastructure fulfill the needs they were set out to meet.

Modern Niagara is one of Canada's Best Managed Companies and has received numerous awards, including SMACNA's Safety Excellence Award Program (SSEAP), Canada's Safest Employers Award, and others recognizing safety and health culture.

We are seeking designers with strong REVIT understanding and developing multiple system knowledge, code understanding, and routing optimization skills.

The responsibilities of the Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) Mechanical Designer include understanding and further developing engineering consultant designs into fabricable, installable, and coordinated virtual models to represent eventual site installation.

The VDC Mechanical Designer will be responsible for designing and modeling at least two of the following disciplines for projects using virtual construction technologies:

  • Mechanical & Domestic Distribution systems
  • Gravity & venting systems
  • Ductwork Systems
  • Mechanical room large bore piping systems with spooling drawing support
  • Sleeving / Embeds / Trimble
  • Conduit Runs
  • Electrical Room / Distribution System

The VDC Mechanical Designer uses modeling and coordination software to route and reroute their discipline amongst architectural, structural, and building elements. Routing must be optimized to reduce costs, ease installation, follow relevant codes, improve consultant design, and represent the trades' intent.

This role involves constant communication with the VDC Project Lead and the Project Superintendent to ensure work aligns with project strategies.

NOTE: If shortlisted, you will be required to submit a portfolio of modeling work (REVIT / AutoCAD / SketchUp), plumbing/installation photos, or artistic work for assessment.

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Model 3D building systems to improve concepts shown in consultant drawings, including QA/QC steps, ensuring code compliance, installability, and cost efficiency.
  2. Issue complete drawings in paper/pdf format to the site team with QA/QC steps.
  3. Maintain copies of drawings and track changes in a database.
  4. Contribute to profitability and competitive advantage using VDC technologies, ensuring delivery deadlines are met.
  5. Oversee fittings libraries and report incorrect fittings to the VDC Manager.
  6. Create final sketches of proposed drawings, checking dimensions, materials, and relationships between parts and structures.
  7. Sketch rough layouts, compute angles, weights, surface areas, dimensions, radii, clearances, tolerances, and openings.
  8. Collaborate cross-functionally to develop designs supporting overall project timing.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. At least 3 years of REVIT experience for Mechanical projects (HVAC, plumbing, piping, sheet metal, etc.).
  2. Post-secondary diploma in Mechanical or Construction Technology, or extensive experience in mechanical contracting.
  3. Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings and documents.
  4. Artistic minimum: clearly sketch isometric piping.
  5. Problem-solving skills in engineering, manufacturing, or construction environments using design tools.
  6. Ability to work in both office and field environments and maintain excellent relationships.
  7. Willingness to pursue continuous learning.

We thank all applicants for their interest; only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
