Brief description of the project:

Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning (TRU-OL) is looking for a qualified content expert/curriculum developer to develop VCCR 1121: Animal Behaviour, Breeds and Handling and VCCR 1211: Veterinary Client Care Reception Procedures & Business .

Course Descriptions:

VCCR 1121:
In this course students will learn about animal breeds and behaviour in large and small animals, plus pocket pets. Students will complete Fear Free training and learn general restraint techniques while learning to recognize animal signals of stress. Students will also learn basic anatomy and identification markers and will complete official documents as a Veterinary Client Care Receptionist.

VCCR 1211:

Students will practice using various veterinary software tools, including managing financial transactions, managing inventory and using genAI tools to help with pre-diagnosis and screening. A key role of the veterinary client care receptionist is to manage communication in the office, and students will explore how to use open communication and
social media tools to help establish a caring clinic environment.

Course Development Process:

The course developer will work under the guidance of the Instructional Designer responsible for the course development project, and in collaboration with the course development team will:

  • Participate in brainstorming and planning sessions.
  • Develop a detailed course planning document for the course which includes relevant learning outcomes, learning activities, and assessments appropriate for an online continuous entry course.
  • Revise and/or develop content, including learning activities and authentic assessments, to ensure that they are relevant and appropriate for an online continuous entry course.
  • Create multimedia or other active learning activities to ensure student engagement through experiential learning.
  • Choose effective and appropriate resources, ideally digital, and prioritize low-cost and accessible options, such as Open Educational Resources (OERs), TRU’s e-Library collection and article databases, and other accessible material and media.
  • Accurately cite sources and identify third-party material that may require copyright clearance as TRU respects intellectual property laws.
  • Follow the guidance of the Instructional Designer on the inclusion of any AI-generated content.

TRU-OL uses a collaborative approach to course development that involves interactive planning meetings and review sessions as needed.

  • Meet the deliverables according to the agreed-upon timeline.
  • Respond to project-related communication and meeting requests in a timely manner (within 48 hours).
  • All team members will provide feedback that is
    • constructive and relevant, and
    • centered on course content and learning activities.
  • Participate in post-development contract evaluation.

The successful candidate will be selected on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Registered Veterinary Technologist, in good standing with the BCVTA required.
  • Demonstration of current and ongoing engagement in the course subject matter through research and/or the scholarship of teaching, including disseminating outcomes in appropriate academic venues.
  • Extensive and current experience in Veterinary Animal Behavior, including active participation in the Veterinary Technology program at Thompson Rivers University.
  • Up-to-date with Fear Free Certification and/or Low Stress Handling techniques, with a strong foundational understanding of animal behavior principles and application.
  • Recent and relevant experience in veterinary reception, with a comprehensive understanding of client service protocols and front-desk operations.
  • Proficient in completing official veterinary documentation, including international travel certificates and regulatory compliance forms.
  • Advanced working knowledge of veterinary software systems, with hands-on experience performing client care and administrative front-end responsibilities.
  • Thorough understanding of veterinary facility opening and closing procedures, including routine operation of common veterinary equipment and systems.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with demonstrated ability to produce clear, consistent, and grammatically accurate documentation.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines reliably and efficiently.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively within a team-based and consultative environment.
  • Experience or formal training in online instruction is considered an asset.
