Community Organizer, Effectiveness Coach, Podcaster

Overview

You’ve mastered the logistics, but now you want to create more than polished schedules and plated dinners. Help us create a conference designed to accelerate real-world impact. The Vancouver Summit for Effective Altruism needs a Production Lead who’s ready to turn practical excellence into lasting change. We believe the right environment can launch ideas that save lives — and we need your help to build it.

Responsibilities

The Production Lead is responsible for all aspects of Summit production.

  • That includes matters related to logistics, venue, food, A/V, and ticketing. Negotiating the best deals for our project is a key skill, as we are budget-constrained.
  • Collaborate with the Project Lead, Content Lead, and Communications Lead. Also, as this is a community event, you will be expected to coordinate a handful of volunteers keen to help execute the event successfully.
  • Attend weekly 30-60 minute virtual core organizer team meetings and 1:1s with the Project Lead. Additional coordination with other leads or volunteers may be needed. In addition, you’re welcome to attend any of our self-organized community events in advance to get familiar with the people you’ll be working with.
  • Stay organized and accountable using the Linear project management tool.
  • Use Discord, Zoom, and Google Workspace for team and external communications.

Key Outcomes

Getting 50-100 like-minded people together enables collaboration and inspiration. With a focus on doing the most good they can do, we are excited at what positive impact the Vancouver Summit could enable. The primary objectives the Summit aims for are to

  • introduce the basic concepts of effective altruism to attendees at that stage of engagement,
  • inspire newcomers to get involved with the community, and
  • accelerate paths-to-impact of people who already have EA context.
  • share high-impact cause-area updates,
  • foster principled and technical discussions,
  • energize attendees in a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment.,
  • help sustain community motivation, and
  • recruit less-engaged people and otherwise drive community growth.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated track record of local (Vancouver area) event production, ideally those focused on professional networking and community building.
  • Basic awareness of good food safety and handling practices and regulations

Preferred Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will be based in or near Vancouver, have familiarity with local event culture, and be available for in-person work hours sporadically in the months leading up to the Summit.
  • While a general familiarity and positive regard for effective altruism (the philosophy, the movement, the community) would probably make this role feel more meaningful for you, it's not required for success in this role. There are certain aspects of effective altruism conference culture that other teammates can get you up to speed on.

Ongoing opportunities

  • The Center for Effective Altruism, this event’s sponsor, organizes a robust global conference series, and a positive reference from this role would likely contribute towards success in various volunteer and paid roles at EA Globals, not to mention other operations roles in organizations associated with the community.
  • If this event goes well, we may be able to run it again, or even upgrade it to an EA Global-x, next year.

Hours and Remuneration

  • While this is an ‘in-person’ role, much of the event planning and preparation happens asynchronously, and on your own. The weekly meetings are virtual. The event will take place over 1-2 days on a weekend, most likely 19-20 September.
  • This contract is for about 180 paid hours. Between June and July you will be expected to work roughly 5 hours a week. In the weeks leading up to and including the event weekend, your weekly hours will increase. You will be expected to continuously track billable hours.
  • The hourly rate will be negotiated between 25 and 40 Canadian dollars per hour, depending mainly on relevant experience. Payment will be on alternate Fridays via INTERAC e-Transfer. Perks include complimentary admission and meals at the Summit.

Not sure if you should apply? Go for it!

Even if you don’t tick every box, we encourage you to apply. The process is quick, and your interest in contributing is valuable. If this role isn’t the right fit, we’d love to have you involved as a volunteer or attendee.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Elliot Billingsley, Project Lead

Apply here by May 13th at 11:59pm Vancouver Time.
