Utility Systems Operator (USO) Trainee Liquid Waste (2 Positions)

Position Title: Utility Systems Operator (USO) Trainee Liquid Waste (2 Positions)

Position Status: Full-Time Temporary (Positions to last not later than December 31, 2025)

Employee Group: GVRDEU

Location: South Fraser Works Yard, Surrey

Salary Range/Wage Rate: $32.84 hourly plus 6.25% deferred compensation

This role receives an additional 6.25% deferred compensation on hours worked, which can be taken as compensation or time off.

Our Liquid Waste Services Department is seeking two USO Trainees Liquid Waste who are team-oriented, eager to learn, safety-conscious, and enjoy working in a diverse environment. We seek individuals passionate about Metro Vancouver's sewer and drainage systems who will bring positive energy to our team.

You are: A team player looking to grow, with a positive, respectful attitude. Candidates should have completed Grade 12, possess mechanical aptitude with tools and equipment, have construction or trades experience, and be proficient with computers.

This role involves:

  • Operating, inspecting, and maintaining wastewater collection and drainage facilities.
  • Assisting in equipment inspection and maintenance.
  • Performing system inspections and cleaning.
  • Executing maintenance tasks such as debris removal, vegetation management, slope stabilization, and beaver dam removal.
  • Operating power tools, mowers, chain saws, jackhammers, and vehicles.
  • Carrying out construction duties including sewer repairs, manhole work, sewer connections, road building, and watercourse rehabilitation.
  • Ensuring safety policies are followed, reporting safety concerns.
  • Maintaining records, submitting reports and timecards.

Qualifications include:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent; additional courses in civil, mechanical, electrical, or instrumentation are a plus.
  • Preference for utility or construction experience.
  • Mechanical skills and construction aptitude.
  • Ability to operate power and pneumatic tools.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Safety awareness.
  • Physical capability for the duties and willingness to work shifts.
  • Willingness to undertake additional training.
  • Valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License.

The trainee will, within 24 months, obtain EOCP Wastewater Collections Level 1 certification. Upon certification, the position will be reclassified to USO I.
