Job summary

The City of Burnaby is seeking a semi-skilled to skilled worker for the Water - Operations, Maintenance & Construction unit. The role involves planning and directing crew activities for water distribution systems, plus assisting a supervisor on complex tasks and performing routine maintenance and inspections.

Qualifications include Grade 12 with water/wastewater tech courses, extensive related experience, and EOCP Level 2; a Class 5 BC driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 12 with technical courses in water & wastewater tech or related field.
• Considerable experience in water operations, construction or maintenance or equivalent mix of training/experience.
• Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in pipelaying and utility repair.
• Hazards, confined space procedures, safety precautions and public health standards knowledge.
• Ability to plan, lead and participate in utility construction/repair work; read and interpret drawings/plans/blueprints.
• Ability to perform heavy manual work outdoors in all weather; operate specialized tools/safety equipment.

Job description

This position works in the Water - Operations, Maintenance. & Construction organizational unit. This is semi-skilled and skilled mechanical work below the journeyman level involving the construction, operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of the City’s water distribution systems. An incumbent of this class is responsible for leading the crew by planning, directing and participating in the work of staff engaged in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of water systems and related infrastructure, assisting a supervisor on the more complex aspects of the installation, repair and servicing work, and performing the less complex repair and maintenance tasks including regular inspectional duties for water monitoring. Oral and written assignments are received from a supervisor who checks the work during progress and upon completion for workmanship and conformance with established standards. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 supplemented by completion of technical courses in water and wastewater technology, civil engineering or a related field, plus considerable experience related to water operations, construction or maintenance; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in pipelaying and utility repair. Considerable knowledge of hazards, confined space procedures, safety precautions, and public health standards. Ability to plan, lead and participate in the utility construction and repair work and provide direction to other staff; to read and interpret technical drawings, plans, and blueprints; to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to perform heavy manual work outdoors in all weather conditions. Skill in the safe use and care of specialized tools and equipment. A valid Class 5 Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia, Water Distribution Operator Certification (Level 2) from the Environmental Operators Certification Program (EOCP) is required.
