Job description

West Fraser offers a range of exciting career opportunities for individuals seeking challenging and rewarding careers. Our High-Level Division in Alberta is currently recruiting for a Utility Operator / General Labourer.

The Utility Operator works safely while performing a variety of tasks around the mill including housekeeping and operating mobile equipment. You will be required to train and operate aerial lifts, forklifts, sweepers, and bucket loaders, along with cross-training in production activities. This is an entry-level position with a variable shift schedule including days, nights, and weekends based on operating needs.

What You’ll Do:

  • Learn the Oriented Strand Board (OSB) manufacturing process - proactively troubleshoot and problem solve to improve our process reliability.
  • Work in a variety of areas including but not limited to the Finishing End, Logyard, and Woodroom.
  • Transport materials to designated areas within the mill using a forklift, skid steer or other mobile equipment.
  • Assist with the routine cleaning of the mill and OSB manufacturing equipment while promptly reporting any malfunctions or issues to the Team Lead.
  • Prepare equipment for maintenance and inspections by cleaning equipment and area when needed.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on safety devices including eyewash stations, fire extinguishers, AEDs, and risers.
  • Perform spark watch activities (monitoring welding and other hot work, to ensure a fire does not occur and to immediately address any incipient fires that start as the result of hot work).
  • Perform confined space watch to ensure safety of those working in confined spaces and immediately respond to any issues.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, adhering to safety and environmental guidelines.
  • Complete general mill housekeeping, including sweeping, cleaning, and removing debris from work area.
  • Use compressed air or water hoses to aid in cleaning equipment.
  • Assist other team members and departments as required to ensure smooth operations.
  • Strict adherence to company safety standards and follow safe work practices such as Lock-out, Pre-task hazard assessments, etc.

Would be considered an asset:

  • Grade 12 High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Availability to perform day and night shifts as needed.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment and perform repetitive tasks such as climbing stairs, lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Able to safely lift/carry items of various sizes/weights.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced noisy environment, with varying temperatures across the mill.
  • Ability to wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which may include respirators and fall arrest harness.
  • Proven track record of being reliable/dependable with limited absenteeism or tardiness.

Skills:

  • Basic computer skills are important, with an ability to develop computer skills relevant to specific job expectations.
  • Effective communication skills, with a genuinely positive attitude and optimistic outlook – building a collaborative team-focused environment.
  • Ability to analyze a situation, evaluate options, and make a calculated decision in a timely manner.
  • Willingness and ability to cross-train to learn new jobs and skills.
  • Personal commitment to safety.

  • Experience in the forestry or manufacturing industry is considered an asset.

  • The salary range for this position may vary depending on experience, education, and location.
