Utility Locator / Damage Prevention Technician

Location: Hamilton

Full-time permanent position, day shift with some flexibility in hours. Frequent opportunities for overtime, including evening and weekend work. Competitive hourly rate ($16 - $18/hr, based on experience) with performance reviews and potential increases every 6 months. Benefits include a defined contribution pension plan. Company vehicle, cell phone, and laptop are provided. Opportunity to work independently outdoors.

PVS Contractors, part of the OEC Services family, is hiring and training new Damage Prevention Technicians to perform utility locates around the city. Damage Prevention Technicians are crucial in preventing damage and danger during excavation by marking underground utility lines.

Responsibilities:
  1. Use advanced locating equipment, GIS, maps, and engineering drawings to identify underground utilities.
  2. Search for gas, phone, and fiber optic cables, marking them with spray paint and flags.
  3. Prepare reports and documentation of your work across the city.

This role is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, problem solvers, and those who enjoy working independently. It offers long-term career growth through training and internal advancement opportunities.

Qualifications:
  • Background in construction, landscaping, surveying, GIS, skilled trades, or engineering.
  • Enjoy working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Physically fit, able to walk on uneven surfaces, lift up to 20 lbs, and operate equipment.
  • Able to distinguish colors visually.
  • Valid Ontario G-class driver’s license with a clean abstract.
  • High school diploma.
  • Willing to wear CSA-approved steel toe boots and pass a criminal background check.
  • Available for weekend and evening overtime.
  • Proficient with computers and Microsoft Office.

Assets include experience in construction, utilities, civil engineering, land surveying, or GIS. Experience as a Damage Prevention Technician is a plus but not required.
