THE COMMUNITY
Located only an hour and a half from the metro areas of Atlanta and Chattanooga. It is a special place rich in culture and beauty. Growing in tourism, home development and business, the future of the area is bright. With the completion of the four-lane Appalachian Highway and the whitewater venue of the 1996 Olympics just across the state line in Tennessee on the Ocoee River, the county has become a favorite spot for tourists and retirees. With more than 40 percent of the area comprised of national forest land, County is the southern end of the Appalachian Trail, attracting every level of outdoor enthusiast to countless scenic hiking opportunities. The Cohutta Wilderness is the largest national forest wilderness in the Eastern United States. A rim of mountains, reaching 4,000 feet into the sky, encircles the county and provides both headwater for cold water trout streams and rivers as well. Mountain trails are also popular sites for mountain biking and all-terrain vehicles. The Lake lies in the center of the area, providing more than 100 miles of shoreline.
