Job summary

The City of Mississauga is seeking a Forestry Technician to support the Forestry Maintenance & Operations team, blending fieldwork, data collection and contractor oversight to care for trees and other forestry assets across streets, parks, and natural areas.

Reporting to supervisors, you will assess health, respond to service requests, collect technical data with GPS and GIS, and help ensure work is completed safely and to high standards while coordinating contract activities and providing

Qualifications

• Post-secondary degree or diploma in urban forestry, forestry, arboriculture, or related discipline.
• ISA Certified Arborist and TRAQ or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
• Minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience in urban forestry.
• Knowledge of urban forestry, arboriculture, and landscape construction principles.
• Experience with tree planting/maintenance on streets, parks and City property.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with residents and officials.
• Valid Ontario G Driver's License with a clean record.
• Willing to obtain a current driver’s abstract at your own expense.

Responsibilities

• Monitor health and condition of trees and vegetation on streets, parks, and natural areas.
• Perform field audits to validate contractor work against contract specs.
• Identify required maintenance on forestry assets.
• Serve as first point of contact with residents for service requests.
• Operate and maintain GPS, GIS, RTK, RPAS and related equipment.
• Collect data, perform analysis, and provide recommendations.
• Safely operate forestry vehicles, equipment and tools.
• Assist in organizing and planning work with the Forestry team.
• Ensure timely delivery of quality customer service and resolutions.
• Coordinate contract lifecycle with supervisors and manage bids where applicable.
• Provide input into specifications for maintenance contracts and bid analysis.
• Ensure contracts comply with legislation, policies and SLAs.
• Monitor contractor performance against SLAs.
