Job description

Upward Bound Summer Residential Tutor at Upward Bound

Recruitment began on April 17, 2025, and the job listing expires on May 23, 2025.

Upward Bound summer tutors are responsible for assisting in classes, leading daily study sessions, and co-facilitating creative workshops. Tutors may also assist with dorm life, help organize special events and field trips, and stay current with course content in collaboration with teachers.

Tutors are present in the dorms and during meals, assigned to small groups of students with whom they share a suite. They meet regularly for activities and mentorship. Candidates should be highly motivated, patient, energetic, and capable of working in a residential setting for 7 weeks (including one week of staff training).

Compensation: $4,200 plus room and board.

Program Dates: June 29 – August 8, 2025 (Sunday evenings to Friday afternoons). Note: June 29 is student move-in day in the afternoon; subsequent Sundays start in the evening.

Location: Dean College, 99 Main St, Franklin, MA 02038

Transportation: Roundtrip transportation from Boston (JFK T-station) to the residential site is provided, with pick-up and drop-off at JFK/UMass T-Station.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Participate fully in staff orientation
  • Enforce UMass Boston Upward Bound rules and regulations
  • Monitor study hall sessions and assist students with coursework
  • Attend classes, assist instructors, and substitute as needed
  • Provide personal and academic counseling to students
  • Attend staff and community meetings
  • Hold regular suite meetings
  • Supervise students at all times, maintaining visibility
  • Assist with supervision during field trips, events, and recreational activities
  • Engage with students during meal times
  • Complete evaluation forms as required
  • Assist with dorm and event setup and cleanup
  • Maintain communication with staff and administration
  • Live and work on-site throughout the program and training
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Matriculating college students (juniors, seniors, graduate students) or college graduates
  • Experience with residential student work, especially with low-income or diverse students, is preferred
  • Skills in athletic or creative areas are a plus
  • Sensitivity to high school students’ needs
  • Ability to coordinate activities and maintain a positive environment
  • Highly energetic and professional

The Upward Bound Program aims to equip students with skills and motivation for post-secondary success, fostering confidence and a love of learning. It offers academic, personal, and college/career enrichment, including a residential summer program that exposes students to college life, rigorous academics, and social skills development. The program empowers students to become agents of change in their lives and communities.
