Job summary

Imperial Oil invites engineering students to join its Materials Integrity/Machinery internship in Calgary. You will work with experienced professionals on projects that analyze inspection data, improve piping and equipment integrity, and recommend cost-effective materials to prevent failures.

The role runs for 12 or 16 months with start dates in January or May 2027. Applicants should be pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical or Materials engineering and be returning to full-time

What You Will Do

You'll work within one of our organizations for the duration of your internship working alongside experienced professionals, receive coaching and mentorship, and contributing to projects that drive real results and add value to the business. Through hands-on experiences, you'll strengthen your professional capabilities while gaining a deeper understanding of industry operations. You'll also gain exposure to the day-to-day work of full-time engineers, scientists, and experienced professionals giving you a sense of what a career at Imperial looks like.

As a Materials Integrity/Machinery Engineering student, you will be performing analysis of inspection data and operating conditions to improve piping and equipment integrity and recommend compatible cost-effective materials to help determine root causes of failures related to corrosion and materials.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Review critical process data and determine effects on equipment / piping
  • Develop mitigation plans and options to minimize corrosion (e.g. increase pipe diameter to slow velocity, resize drum to allow better separation, etc.)
  • Manage or create corrosion control programs
  • Review novel materials with Materials experts and assess for viability
  • Identify degradation modes and materials parameters for use in risk assessments & RBI equipment strategy development
  • Estimate a probability of failure for various degradation modes by reviewing historic inspection data, operating and service data, and industry and company guides
  • Review erosion / corrosion rates and recommend follow-ups based on the inspection resultsIdentify equipment operating envelope requirements to minimize corrosion
  • Review site changes and identify impacts to materials degradation and inspection
  • Establish piping circuits and assign EDDs to the circuits
  • Review current TMLs and optimize locations and inspection frequency
  • Support our machinery program and collaborate with the operations, maintenance and technical teams
  • Surveillance of machinery operating performance including recommendations to improve performance and reliability
  • Providing machinery input for change events including operating or setpoint changes
  • Interfacing with maintenance and vendors to develop repair plans
  • Specifying equipment new or replacement in kind equipment.

  • Studying to achieve a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Engineering - Role best suited for Mechanical or Materials programs
  • University student available for a work term beginning in January or May 2027
  • Currently enrolled in a university program and returning to full-time studies after the work term
  • Demonstrated leadership and strong academic skills
  • Highly motivated, enthusiastic, results-oriented individuals who are energized by working with people and by achieving superior results
  • Demonstrated initiative, curiosity, and commitment to continuous learning
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are required for the role

Preferred Qualifications/Experience
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Adobe Reader, or similar engineering software
  • Understanding of engineering drawings and technical documents
  • Proficiency with Power BI and exposure with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint is highly desirable.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and decision-making skills.
