The United Way of Prince Edward Island and the Community Foundation of PEI (CFPEI) will provide a combined funding of $585,000 to support PEI charities responding to COVID-19. This initiative is part of a partnership with Community Foundations of Canada, United Way Centraide Canada, and the Canadian Red Cross, funded through the Government of Canada's $350M Emergency Community Support Fund (ECSF).
This national effort aims to support vulnerable populations disproportionately affected by COVID-19. Vulnerable groups are less prepared to deal with the health, social, and economic impacts of the pandemic, increasing the need for critical community-based supports. The ECSF will assist registered charities in providing essential services during this period.
Effective May 19, United Way of PEI and the Community Foundation of PEI will accept applications for funding from qualified donees. Grants will support services addressing social inclusion or well-being needs of vulnerable populations related to the pandemic. Funds can be used for staffing, materials, supplies, resources, or other immediate needs of Islanders affected by COVID-19.
Funding will be issued on an ongoing basis through July 2020, subject to available funds. Charities and community organizations are encouraged to visit the United Way PEI and Community Foundation of PEI websites for eligibility and application details. The United Way of PEI will invest $325,000, focusing on projects of $25,000 and above. The Community Foundation of PEI will allocate $260,000, with grants of up to $25,000 available.
Andrea MacDonald, CEO of United Way of PEI, stated, “As the pandemic continues, we see new and complex needs emerging. It’s vital that local charities have the resources to adapt and expand their efforts.”
Kent Hudson, Executive Director of CFPEI, added, “This funding is a crucial step in the fight against COVID-19. We are committed to quickly supporting local charities so no community member is left behind.”
The ECSF was announced on April 21, 2020, by the Prime Minister of Canada as part of broader emergency response measures.
Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, emphasized, “Canadian charities are vital in times of need. The Government of Canada’s support ensures they can continue their essential work.”
Andrea Dicks, President of Community Foundations of Canada, highlighted the importance of local foundations, stating, “Our network is committed to supporting vulnerable groups and building resilient communities during this crisis.”
