The Opportunity

Zurich Canada is currently looking for an Automobile Underwriting Specialist to further develop our portfolio in the Ontario commercial insurance market.

Reporting to the Regional Manager of Automobile, you will be responsible for a portfolio of existing medium to large complex commercial auto risks, but you will also have the ability to develop your automobile portfolio further. Leveraging your broad broker network and your in-depth underwriting knowledge of all automobile products regionally and nationally to grow your book of business.

To analyze and underwrite new and renewal business, under limited direction, utilizing The Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework within delegated authority levels on highly complex assignments ensuring a high-level service to customers.

What you will do:
  1. Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities with key broker partners.
  2. Complete detailed opportunity assessment with key distributors to identify growth opportunities.
  3. Qualify accounts to meet with the organization's appetite, balanced with sound business opportunity.
  4. Make agent/broker/customer and on-site calls with a planned and well-prepared purpose.
  5. Negotiate Terms & Conditions and close deals.
  6. Cross-Sell other lines of business to increase product density with the account.
  7. Participate in Sales Team meetings as related to assigned brokers and/or territory.
  8. Proactively engage in the target account process, managing a qualified list of opportunities 90 to 120 days prior to effective date.
  9. Update required systems with details of broker/client visits and account status within specified time frame.
  10. Serve as key contact for assigned target accounts.
  11. Develop strong broker and client networks as related to industries underwritten by Business Unit.
  12. Calculate Target Price accurately by utilizing underwriting tools appropriately.
  13. Measure exposure/analyze risk.
  14. Assist in training and developing staff.
  15. Provide expertise on coverage issues with claims programs and guidelines.
  16. Contribute to development of underwriting manuals, programs, and guidelines.
  17. Approve/place facultative purchases.
  18. Promote the organization's products and services in order to increase penetration within agency plant.
  19. Ensure the successful completion of projects by maintaining continuing dialogue with business unit sponsors during implementation of major projects.
  20. Diagnose and develop recommendations to solve unique business unit and customer problems.
  21. Lead complex technical or long-term (over 6 months) business projects to implement new or changed systems, programs, or products.
  22. Investigate, recommend and implement leading edge technical solutions when they meet customer needs.
Job Qualifications

Required:

  1. High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area.
  2. OR High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area.
  3. OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area.
  4. OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 8 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area.

AND

  1. Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  2. Experience working on time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
  3. Experience working in a team environment.

Preferred:

  1. 5+ years Underwriting Commercial Automobile Risks (IRCA, Garage, Fleet) with a focus on medium to large accounts.
  2. Experience in:
  • Medium to large sized, bulk rated fleet risks;
  • Loss rated accounts;
  • Working with actuarial type risks;
  • Loss sensitive, high retention policies;
  • Heavy commercial US exposure and/or US plated;
  • Filings and Regulatory challenges;
  • Updated fleet technology knowledge.
  • Bachelors Degree.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Microsoft Office experience.
