The Opportunity:

Liberty is seeking an Underwriter or Senior Underwriter to join our Commercial Lines Underwriting team in Calgary. The primary focus of the role will be underwriting, maintaining, and growing an assigned renewal portfolio as well as prospecting and pursuing new business targets. The successful candidate will be responsible for Middle Market business with a focus on Property within the Alberta & Prairies Region Underwriting team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Focus on proactive market engagement activities to drive organic new business growth. Key areas of focus include appetite delivery, submission generation and proactive pipelining, in addition to core marketing and market presence activities.
  2. Responsible for proactive account management and new business production and underwriting of Middle Market accounts including analysis of risk, negotiation of policy terms and conditions, and confirmation of rate adequacy, all consistent with Liberty underwriting guidelines and strategies, and with a focus on building a long-term and profitable portfolio. Ensure proper exposure analysis, documentation, quality and timeliness of account summaries, file organization, adherence to Underwriter guidelines, and effective use of risk services, actuary and claims resources.
  3. Maintain and expand Liberty broker and client relationships through regular marketing activities, and the development of a pipeline of preferred Middle Market clients.
  4. Work closely with other Liberty business units to leverage multi-line business opportunities.
  5. Demonstrate effective prioritization of workload and provide superior customer service to our brokers and clients.
  6. Demonstrate a desire for and continuous pursuit towards ‘elite underwriting’ skills and knowledge of Liberty products, with a focus on Property products.
  7. Continuous learning and development through attendance of industry events, relevant seminars, and courses, and learning from existing Liberty expertise.
  8. Follow Liberty’s Guidelines for Inclusion and encourage its use at Liberty. Build personal DE&I knowledge and act as an early adopter of new DE&I skills and processes to drive positive change.
  9. Other duties and projects as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications:

  1. A minimum of 2 - 5 years’ experience underwriting commercial P&C insurance with an emphasis on Property.
  2. University degree or equivalent post-secondary education with relevant insurance designations/ education is an asset.
  3. Firm understanding of core P&C policy wordings, trends, pricing and strategies, with strong industry knowledge.
  4. Self-starter with strong analytical skills, in addition to strong business and interpersonal communication skills required.
  5. Superior relationship management and negotiation skills.
  6. Must portray action oriented behavioral traits and is dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers.
  7. Able to make sound underwriting decisions in a timely manner under tight deadlines.
  8. Excellent communication, organizational and time management skills.
  9. Collaborates well across business units.
