Compensation Details :

  • Underwriter 17: Salaries typically range from $83,037 to $110,717 annually, based on qualifications and experiences, plus a performance-based incentive.
  • Underwriter 18: Salaries typically range from $94,664 to $126,219 annually, based on qualifications and experiences, plus a performance-based incentive.

Location:

  • Export Development Canada operates in a hybrid work environment, currently requiring employees to work in the office 2 days per week. (subject to change)
  • This role can be performed from EDC’s headquarters in Ottawa or from one of our Community Hubs located in Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, or Vancouver.

Team Overview:

EDC International Trade Guarantee (ITG) team is seeking to recruit an Underwriter to become an integral part of our diverse team of dynamic and motivated professionals responsible for delivering bank guarantee and bonding solutions to Canadian Financial Institutions supporting large corporate Canadian customers. Our goal, in collaboration with our internal and external partners, is to deliver value to customers through our unique and versatile suite of solutions. To demonstrate our ability to act as a trusted partner and support our Canadian clients as they to go, grow and succeed internationally.

An ITG Underwriter manage a portfolio of Canadian Exporters and Investors with the objective of delivering the appropriate bank guarantee and bonding solutions to facilitate international trade. They will be responsible for assessing risks, primarily related to the exporter, and structuring transactions inorder to meet customer needs while satisfying EDC's risk management requirements. The role is customer facing and involves managing transaction through their full lifecycle, including early stage triage, risk rating, structuring, issuance and risk management.

We are currently recruiting for a permanent role. This poster may also be used to fulfil future hiring needs (both contract & permanent) over the next 12 months.

Discipline Summary

  • Assesses financial, environmental / social technical, contractual and managerial risks of exporters and structures transactions (pricing, legal requirements, documentation, credit enhancements, etc.) in order to meet customer needs while satisfying the corporation's risk management requirements
  • Demonstrates strong customer relationship management through engagements with customers and financial partners
  • Interacts and collaborates with domestic and foreign financial institutions, sureties, account managers and customers to clarify needs and structure transactions appropriately
  • Determines financial eligibility on Canadian exporters and performs credit and non-credit risk analysis to understand the company's current and future capabilities with regards to all types of obligations (ex: debt repayment, profitability and cash flow management), and uses business/economic/political analytical thinking to identify other types of risks associated with transactions
  • Presents transactions and risk assessments to internal approval individuals and committees to arrive at a decision that satisfies all parties.

What you will be doing:

  • Assesses risks related to exporters, negotiates and structures complex transactions in order to meet customer needs and satisfy the Corporation's risk management requirements and presents results of risk analysis for approval within the proper guidelines and Delegation of Authority
  • Collaborates with Canadian and Foreign financial institutions, sureties, EDC Business Development and the Customer to develop and maintain key customer relationships and structure a transaction appropriately
  • Partners with various internal advisory services to assess non-credit risks to determine if transactions are viable and is in compliance with EDC’s risk management policies.
  • Supports the performance, growth and integrity of the program by setting underwriting policies, standards and guidelines, ensuring adherence, leading continuous improvement activities and delivering product enhancements
  • Develops and uses professional network (bankers and surety professionals) to strengthen and deepen risk analysis and understanding of the industry

What we are looking for:

  • Undergraduate Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Commerce or other relevant discipline
  • 5 years (Underwriter 17) or 7 years (Underwriter 18) of experience in financial analysis or underwriting or related financial services experience
  • Solid experience reading and interpreting financial statements with strong financial analysis skills
  • Experience leading and supporting the successful completion of increasingly complex commercial credit transactions across a variety of industry sectors and international markets

What will make you stand out:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and French
  • Working knowledge of letters of guarantee / letters of credit and trade finance principles and practices
  • MBA, CFA, CPA designation
