  • Underwriter 15 : Salaries typically range from $63,894 to $85,194 annually, based on qualifications and experiences, plus a performance-based incentive.
  • Underwriter 16 : Salaries typically range from $72,840 to $97,121 annually, based on qualifications and experiences, plus a performance-based incentive.

Location :

  • Export Development Canada operates in a hybrid work environment, currently requiring employees to work in the office 2 days per week. (subject to change)
  • This role can be performed from EDC’s headquarters in Ottawa or from one of our Community Hubs located in Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, or Vancouver.

Team Overview

EDC International Trade Guarantee (ITG) team is seeking to recruit an Underwriter to become an integral part of our diverse team of dynamic and motivated professionals responsible for delivering bank guarantee and bonding solutions to Canadian Financial Institutions supporting medium sized corporate Canadian customers. Our goal, in collaboration with our internal and external partners, is to deliver value to customers through our unique and versatile suite of solutions. To demonstrate our ability to act as a trusted partner and support our Canadian clients as they go, grow and succeed internationally.

An ITG Underwriter manages a portfolio of Canadian Exporters with the objective of delivering the appropriate bank guarantee and bonding solutions to facilitate international trade. They will be responsible for assessing risks, primarily related to the exporter, and structuring transactions to meet customer needs while satisfying EDC's risk management requirements. The role is customer facing and involves managing transaction through their full lifecycle, including early- stage triage, risk rating, structuring, issuance, and risk management.

We are currently recruiting for a permanent role. This poster may also be used to fulfil future hiring needs (both contract & permanent) over the next 12 months.

  • Under guidance, undertakes assigned credit / non-credit risk assessment / validation activities, applying established methods and models to common, defined risks and mitigants.
  • Demonstrates strong customer relationship management through engagements with customers and financial partners.
  • Under guidance, completes assigned portfolio management activities for conventional obligors / policies / policyholders involving standard, recurring asset management and monitoring activities.
  • Interacts and collaborates with domestic and foreign banks, sureties, account managers and customers to clarify the need and to structure the transaction appropriately.
  • Under guidance, completes assigned structuring activities such as pricing and documentation for conventional, repeat transactions involving minimal customization. Joins and / or participates in stakeholder discussions with senior colleagues.
  • Builds effective working relationships within the internal client organization, delivering high-quality professional services with guidance from senior colleagues.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Develop knowledge and understanding of the organization's policies and procedures and of relevant regulatory codes and codes of conduct to ensure own work adheres to those standards. Obtain authorization from a supervisor or manager for any exceptions from mandatory procedure.
  • Collaborate with Canadian and Foreign Banks, Sureties, EDC Business Development and Customers to develop and maintain key customer relationships and structure a transaction appropriately.
  • Implement improvements and provide feedback on them. Use change management systems and protocols to provide routine supportive services.
  • Assist with external stakeholder engagement by arranging actions, meetings, events, and supporting materials to promote stakeholder understanding and commitment.
  • Build effective working relationships within the internal client organization, delivering high-quality professional services with guidance from senior colleagues.

What We Are Looking For

  • Undergraduate Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or other relevant discipline
  • 2 years (Underwriter 15) or 2-5 years (Underwriter 16) years of experience in underwriting, or in financial analysis, or related financial services experience
  • Knowledge of underwriting and / or financial transaction structuring and / or contract bonding principles and practices

What Will Make You Stand Out

  • CFA, CPA designation or enrollment in these programs
  • Bilingual in both official languages (French and English)
