Underwriter II (Personal Lines Mono)
Location: Winnipeg Office. This role is eligible for hybrid work. This means you’ll have the flexibility of working from home and in the office (Winnipeg Office), on a scheduled rotation once probation requirements have been met. Until then, the successful incumbent will be expected to work on-site, full-time.

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY
The Underwriter II Personal Lines (Mono-Line) is responsible for underwriting complex personal lines insurance risks. They train, mentor and coach staff in junior positions. This position evaluates, rates, and processes insurance requests for property or auto insurance products. The Underwriter II is customer-focused and looks for innovative ways to improve the customer experience. The Underwriter II develops and maintains relationships with brokers to build lasting and profitable relationships.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Underwriting Operations
- Evaluates multiple products and their risk factors in a holistic and customer-centric approach to determine risk acceptability and rating.
- Reviews and evaluates quotes, new applications, renewals, revisions, and cancellations to determine risk acceptability within current underwriting authority.
- Researches and obtains additional information on risk if required using technology as well as external data sources for the purposes of quoting, negotiating, and authorizing the acceptance of risk.
- Determines if risk is acceptable, needs modification, or should be declined based on analysis of all information pertinent to the risk and within the underwriter's authority.
- Calculates premiums, ensuring that appropriate rates are used, and application discounts and surcharges are applied within established underwriting guidelines, applicable laws, and regulations.
- Negotiates with brokers as to the conditions, limitations, rates, and premiums to apply.
- Corresponds with brokers to request information and explain underwriting requirements and decisions.
- Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to discuss risk acceptance and policy wording interpretation.
- Completes large loss, underwriter reviews and claim alerts providing feedback and recommendations on underwriting decisions and actions.
- Mentors, provides direction, and reviews and approves the work of staff in junior positions.
- Collaborates with loss prevention partners (internal and external) to measure risk acceptability and to improve risk.
- Understands existing and emerging industry and regional trends and market conditions and obtains additional information on risk if required.
- Analyzes and makes data-driven decisions on broker’s book of business.
- Assists in periodic work reviews for quality assurance purposes for underwriters and brokers.
- Identifies and recommends improvements to procedures, insurance products, systems and participates in projects.
- Determines percentage of involvement in ceding and placement of policies (where required).
- Interprets and applies policy wordings, conditions, limitations, rates, and premiums with a strong focus on customer needs.
Broker Relationship Management
- Delivers one view of personal lines that combines product, technology, and services for broker partners.
- Identifies opportunities to improve broker experience and seeks to find solutions while adhering to the company guidelines.
- Develops and maintains relationships with an assigned group of brokers to develop lasting and profitable relationships, which involve broker visits.
- Collaborates with claims and other departments to deliver a consistent experience to brokers and customers.
- Assists with training to staff, brokers, and external parties on products and procedures. May be required to conduct formal presentations.
- Understands the technology brokers use and offers tailored approaches to deliver on the ease of doing business mandate.
- Explains underwriting criteria and decisions to brokers (verbally and/or in writing).

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Knowledge of the coverages of insurance products and related provincial/federal legislation applicable Personal Lines (Auto or Property)
- Knowledge of the Principles & Practices of Insurance
- Knowledge and skill of the rating procedures, the interpretation and application of established criteria and/or procedures to determine appropriate premiums, coverages, and deductibles for applicable insurance products.
- Skill in promoting SGI CANADA insurance products to brokers
- Knowledge of reinsurance principles.
- Knowledge of other lines of insurance.
EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS
- A two-year diploma from an accredited post-secondary education institution in a relevant field of study, such as Business, or defined equivalency.
EXPERIENCE
- 2 - 4 years’ experience in underwriting.
