Job description

As an Underwriter in our Commercial Lines department, your work will have a big impact by networking and building relationships with brokers and growing a profitable book of business. People will count on you to use your superior customer service and sales skills to make good business decisions while analyzing and selecting risks in property and/or liability insurance. We have a full-time hybrid permanent position requiring a minimum of 2 days per week in the Vancouver or Victoria office.

What you'll do here :

  1. Assess, evaluate, and negotiate on moderate to complex risks.
  2. Apply effective pricing and underwriting strategies in accordance with the company guidelines and personal underwriting authority limits.
  3. Within your level of authority, quote, negotiate, sell, and authorize the acceptance of moderate to complex new business, renewals, and endorsements to develop and retain profitable business according to the business plan established for the department.
  4. Participate in broker visits, insurance industry functions, and marketing events in support of broker relationship development.
  5. Arrange reinsurance if and when required.
  6. Answer inquiries, develop, and monitor business with brokers through visits, discussions, and correspondence.
  7. Use the computer system for policy inquiry, electronic filing, underwriting, and rating transactions.
  8. Make recommendations to improve the department and increase its efficiency.
  9. Foster cooperative broker relationships to identify and develop sales opportunities.
  10. Some travel is required.

What you bring to the table :

  1. Minimum of 2 years of underwriting assistance experience.
  2. Commercial Lines experience is a strong asset.
  3. Very strong analytical and customer service skills.
  4. Initiative and ability to work under pressure.
  5. Strong negotiating skills and business savvy.
  6. Ability to develop and maintain excellent relationships with brokers.
  7. College diploma or university degree and/or an equivalent combination of work experience and education.
  8. Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) or working towards this designation.
  9. No Canadian work experience required; however, must be eligible to work in Canada.

Salary of the successful candidate will typically be positioned between the following range, taking into consideration a number of factors including prior experience, qualifications, anticipated contribution to role, location, and internal equity :

$51,000 - $77,000
