Cowan Insurance Group is looking for a highly qualified Underwriter to join our Broker Services Team! This role is reporting to the Manager, Broker Services. The Underwriter is part of a team responsible for underwriting the personal and commercial accounts, including marine pleasure craft, self-storage, and high-risk residential programs.

What you will do :

  • Underwrite in accordance with the internal guidelines and rules applicable to the programs, provide quotes on new business, process renewals, policy changes and cancellations
  • Review coverages, products, and trends to aid in the development of products and offerings
  • Develop and maintain relationships with the broker networks
  • Assist management in the implementation of new programs, new systems, and new procedures
  • Participate in process and product improvement and documentation, program audits, annual program reviews, carrier relationship building, systems changes and claims
  • Analyze risk exposures and determine appropriate pricing and coverage terms to ensure profitability and compliance
  • Collaborate with actuarial, claims, and product development teams to refine underwriting strategies and guidelines
  • Monitor portfolio performance and identify trends or emerging risks that may impact underwriting results
  • Prepare, present and collaborate on reports and recommendations to management regarding underwriting performance and product development teams to refine underwriting strategies and guidelines
  • Participate in industry events, training sessions, and continuing education to stay current with market trends and regulatory changes

What you will bring :

  • Previous underwriting experience in Personal Insurance or Commercial Insurance required (3-5 years minimum)
  • Knowledge of various underwriting tools is an asset such as BVS, TUW etc.
  • Lloyds cover holder processes and bordereaux experience is an asset
  • Knowledge of boats and marine coverage would be an asset (either power or sail)
  • Knowledge of high risk residential, personal and commercial policy forms is an asset
  • The ability to clearly and confidently communicate ideas, data, and recommendations to diverse audiences, both written and oral, including tailoring content to the audience, engaging listeners, and handling questions with poise
  • High level of self-motivation with ability to perform effectively independently.
  • Attention to detail to process large volume of transactions accurately with high organizational and documentation skills
  • Ability to analyze potential areas of improvement, efficiencies, and coverage / product opportunities
  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of MS Office products
  • RIBO license or ability to obtain is an asset
  • Working towards CIP designation is an asset
